Why Is Firefox So Popular?

2006:

Firefox market share is currently reported at  12.93%  worldwide as per OneStat.com

IE market share is currently down to 83.05%.

2002:

IE market share was reported at 96.6% worldwide as per OneStat.com

Firefox initially became publicly available in 2002 under the name "Phoenix."

Note a little math:

96.6% [IE market share in 2002] – 12.93% [Firefox market share currently] = 83.67%

This is close to IE's actual market share currently - 83.05%.

It looks like Firefox' growth has largely been at IE's expense.

I wonder if Microsoft has noticed?

Best regards,

Epaminondas

The answer to why is Firefox so popular to PC users is simple...

... it isn't IE.  smile.gif

I think first, it works, it has eye candy it's cross platformed and open sourced, which makes it a formula that's hard to beat. wink.gif

I agree w/Sandbox.  Firefox works.  [I used to use iCab for that reason]  And at my advanced age and decrepit condition, "Eye Candy" is about the only "Sweet Stuff" I can handle.

Firefox seems to work better for me than any other browser I have tried, and Thunderbird works best for my email.  Everyone says it is safer, I can't vouch for that as I haven't been hit by anything yet.

I just wish there weren't websites I have to goto regularly that insist on IE!   angry.gif

So far, any websites that "suggest" IE, I've also been able to access with Netscape. I also use Netscape for sites that I need to allow pop-ups. On my primary Mac (my eMac), FF and Netscape are the only two browsers I use.
