OT(ish)! RIP Windows 98
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:14:28 PM »
BBC news magazine piece on the demise of MS's "most popular" OS which it quotes MS as having "transitioned to a non-supported status".
QUOTE
While few will mourn the recalcitrant eight-year-old, many computer users will harbour fond memories of Windows 98. In automobile terms, it could be likened to a Volvo 240, a cumbersome but useful vehicle, with problems that were well-known but solvable.

It invites readers' "tributes" and it would seem that few are taking the matter too seriously:

I'm thinking more like a Ford Ranchero; old and rusty but it could still carry something!

There are still a number of Windows 98 machines at work; most of them would run XP but the budget won't let us upgrade.  We're going to phase them all out (hopefully) this winter.  We have MAC's but only in Journalism and Graphics labs!

I still say Windows 98 and even DOS would still serve a purpose if you had a working system with them on it.  They may not be the best tool but they still work!

Wow! 98! Most of our PCs are limping along trying - and usually managing - to run QuarkXPress 3.1 on 95 (I'm lucky - I've got a Win98 machine which manages to run at the speed of warm treacle and freezes or crashes only two or three times a day...  smile.gif
Macs in our place are on the imaging desk (grey and white G4s running Photoshop OS9.x) and in the advert design studio.

The trouble with the older machines (mostly 98) in our schools is having to run the Novell operating system on top of Windows.  Really makes them into lead roller skates!

I went to summer camp at Hofstra
where i think we used Windows 2k
and they had Novell installed on top of it
i think they were Optiplex GX1's

old school...

i haven't been back in a while so i don't know what they have now
probably newer optiplex's like the GX260 and such
running XP

We use NT4 in the library at our school (when they should really be using 2k because it's more "updated" for GXa's and GX1's) and XP on our newer machines (GX150 and newer)
We have very few macs left, but what we do have (Clamshell 466mhz cart, G3 All-In-One's 266mhz, DV's 400mhz, and G4 Tower's 400mhz) are running OS9 because the district stopped supporting them.

I think that I would mostly encourage people to put Linux onto old boxes anyway!  I'm cleaning out the basement and plan to set up a Pentium II I've got down there with a copy of Ubuntu and Open Office and sell it for a small amount at this fall's area wide garage sale!  I could dig up a copy of Windows 98 for it but this seems to be a more useful solution.  I don't, as I've said, have a choice at work!
