Native MAC OS X Gimp,
« on: July 17, 2006, 03:08:23 PM »
I have been working a little bit with GIMPSHOP under Windows and I'm looking forward to the day when the native Gimp is available on OS X:

I'm assuming that perhaps GIMPSHOP would be coming fast on the heals of the native GIMP and give Photoshop a run for it's money!

I thought GIMP ran native under X11. I loaded the thing — twice — and killed it each time because it's so damned ugly and behaves like a Windows app.

That's exactly the problem I've been having with the X11 version; the combo of the Windows version with the GimpShop shell/add-on works pretty well I think.  I don't know of anything that works well in the X11 shell but older/younger but wiser heads may point the way to something!

It would be good, though, if it is more Mac-like and could replace Photoshop. I've resisted updating Photoshop 7 because I'm trying to get off that gerbil wheel, and not just with Adobe. I've succeeded with QuarkXpress (at the expense of having to keep System 9, but I don't have to update 9 anymore, either).

Having had the [cough] pleasure [/cough]  rolleyes.gif of using the GIMP on our Linux laptop, all I can say is  getsick.gif .  wink.gif

If it's really more *mac* like and if it does the nice things that PSE (or PS) does, then I might consider it.  tongue.gif

Somehow I think Sneakers is gonna be delighted, as he likes the GIMP, even under X11. The man is sick I tell ya!  laugh.gif

I think GIMP was written by Linux type people with that mindset and they do like it a lot; I think it's a lot like old DOS stuff I used to see in pre-Windows days, a roll-your-own type user interface that, if you take the time to learn, isn't too bad and the program itself is pretty powerful.  It isn't, by any stretch, Photoshop, but it isn't bad for the price.  A proper shell for it makes it more useful!
