Is MacHome defunct?
« on: August 23, 2006, 08:25:11 PM »
A while ago there was a thread discussing the end of a Mac magazine. If I reme mber correctly, the magazine was MacHome. Is this correct? The reason I ask is that I received a bill to extend my subscription to macHome. This is done by one of these "fly-by-night" independent subscription companies that pretend to be a component of the magazine publisher.

Thanks for any info,

MamaMoose

Looks that way. I certainly wouldn't go sending them or anyone else any money for a subscription to it!

Several months ago, I renewed my subscription to MacHome, directly. They never cashed my check and I am no longer receiving the magazine. I assume they are indeed out of business. Darn, I liked the magazine too.

Thanks, everyone. I am informing the Oregon Attorney General's office about what appears to be an apparent fraud! TS strikes again to destroy the evil doers!!!

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I was the one who started the previous thread about MacHome.  Yes, indeed, theyve gone under.  Tis very sad, as it was a great little magazine. Full of great hints and info.
I went to their website and called the people who host it, and from there, I was able to find out from some other site that it was true.
Thank you for this new link, it does explain it a little better.
On another subject, in the latest Kiplinger magazine, the editor explaines about how some flybynight companies or individuals, make a subscription renewal letter look like it came from the magazine, when indeed it does not.  So you send in your $, and the magazine never gets it.  So I phone the magazines who our family subscribes to, first before sending any money.
US news and world report sent my elderly aunt so many 'subscription reminders', that she would have been 200 years old before it ran out.  So there are many scams out there.
But I think that MacHome came upon financial problems, and had to bail out.  I dont believe that they were out to cheat any of us.  I am sure we will find out eventually what happened.
I am out a few $ too, but I dont think that I would do anything about it.  They werent about scamming people, they just fell upon hard times from what I guess.

Yes, they went under. They had problems with selling the magazine and with how much money they got from advertising.
So it was not intentional.
They just couldnt make it.
Its not easy nowadays, some businesses go great, and some are not able to continue.
When you factor in costs, rent, employees, health insurance, and all the other stuff,,,,,sometimes you just cant keep it up.
So MacHome is gone, and its sad, they were good.  Too bad they couldnt combine up with the 2 others which I subscribe to.

MacFormat looks excellent!
I would love to purchase one issue to see if it is something that I want to get.  Could be a bit beyond my abilities, or a bit too technical for me, so dont want to spend $100 before checking it out first.
I was unaware of this magazine!  I will look at their site when Ive more time.
Ive never subscribed to a magazine which has to be sent overseas, so I was wondering how long it takes to get here, and in what condition.
Actually I have, the Tico Times, a Costa Rican newspaper, but they have an English version which is published in Miami and sent from there.
Thank you for the link, I will seriously consider subscribing.
