Apple battery recall info
« on: August 25, 2006, 12:13:31 AM »
Thought someone had posted this already, but can't find it, so here goes:

https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/

(unfortunately doesn't include my PB G4...it's battery is on its last legs and a free replacement would have been rather welcome!!)

Thanks for posting this, Paddy.  I first heard about this on the news this morning, and came to TS to find out what I had to do.

I think my 15-inch PB G4 is out of the range, going by the serial number under "About this Apple" but I'll take out the battery & check anyway.

My daughter's 12-inch PB G4 was purchased more recently -- around 6-8 months ago -- I'll check it out when she wakes up.

My other daughter, in Maryland, purchased a 12-inch iBook that is older, too, so may not qualify.

Thanks again for posting this.  We know where to turn first!

Thought someone had posted this already, but can't find it, so here goes:

I know it was posted here before....

Yesterday, I came to TS and read a post alerting me to this recall.  I followed a link in that post that gave the details of the rebate.  From that I determined that my old, now non functioning, iBook G4 battery was on the list of those being recalled.  From there I went to the Apple support website and signed up for the new battery.  After doing this, I went back to TS to post an update on the original post and it was gone!  Ummm... where did it go?

Anyway,  I assume Apple as well as others are getting swamped with recall requests, because it literally took me all afternoon trying to get into the Apple support page detailing and fulfilling the battery recall.  Most times the page wouldn't load and if it did the second page would time out after you entered your info.... etc...

I was already familiar with this procedure, because I just received a new battery for my Macbook Pro two weeks ago.  That recall was due only to poor performance, not because of fire danger. What is funny is that I could still use the Macbook Pro battery until the new one arrived.  When I did that recall, The confirmation email said I would have the new one within 3-5 days (It actually took about a week, but still not bad.)  The confirmation email I got from Apple yesterday for the latest recall, says it will take 4-6 WEEKS!  I'm glad I'm not using that computer!  I don't really need the battery at all, but since they are so expensive, I guess I will try sell it since I won't have to open the package...

My daughter's 12" PB qualifies for replacement.  I've ordered it through the link listed. I cannot tell if the battery, once removed, can come out of the "cover" and the cover be replaced without the battery?  Or is it all one piece?  Should we plug it into the power plug with the battery compartment open?

Thanks,
Lorraine

Looks like it's all one piece, Lorraine.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86304

And yes, you can certainly run the computer plugged into the wall with the battery compartment open. smile.gif

Bill - I too thought that post had been here. Odd, very odd, but it has well and truly disappeared (I just looked - both by topic and by posts by you). huh.gif

My husband also qualified for a new battery for his AlBook. Didn't mention any difficulty filling out the forms etc. this morning. I guess the wait might have something to do with the fact that this recall affects so many people - those batteries were used in millions of machines. So there is probably a bit of supply problem! 1.8 million were recalled by Apple and 4.1 million were recalled by Dell. This is going to cost someone (one assumes that the cost will be borne at least partly by Sony!) a lot of money - estimates run from $170M to $340M.

I heard that Sony is going to be responsible for the whole bill.

Thanks Paddy & Steve, for your help about the battery.
