This is happened twice, I had 2 messages inform me that my mail reader wont deal with HTML, and it does all the time with all my other messages.
Example,,,,,,I just got one from Sue Chastain(Photopshop tuts) with all sorts of pictures, links, and whatever.

Here is what the message from the other sender said.  (Its an order confirmation for a new medicine cabinet, from medicinecabinetshop.com)

"You are reading this message as plain text, because your mail reader does not handle HTML."

In Mail preferences, in "Viewing", I have it set to "Display images and embedded objects in HTML Messages".
Is this the way I should have it?
In Composing, I have it set to Rich Text.

Perhaps could the problem be on the senders end?  Im not too good at this mail stuff,,,,,,,

That's the correct place to set things up, if that's what you really want to have. You might want to do a seacrh here for reasons why you would not to do things that way, however.

The basic problem may be that Mail's prefs are not being accessed/edited for the changes you might be making. First, what is the "Modified" for Mails ".plist" file? ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist in column view will show the date Created and Modified.

Just take that ".plist" and put it on your Desktop. Restart Mail and make the changes you want to the "Viewing" part. Now check the "Modified" date. It should be just a few seconds ago. If the dates look appropriate, restart Mail and see if you can view those messages with out seeing that text. The text will still be in the message, but the html will not show it.

If that date is not recent, you may need to reinstall the app because it is not writing to the file as it should.

Hi ABD,
Egads, I took the .plist file, and restarted mail, everything was missing.  Like it was brand new setting up mail.
All my mailboxes,,,,,,,gone, so I replaced the new .plist with the old.  Its OK now.
I sure dont know what I am doing, so I better not do anything more.
Modified, "Today at 3:40". The time thing seems correct, I guess.
But here is what almost all of my mail looks like,

so the HTML must be working OK?  I just got this one.
And just got one from a friend with a .jpg cartoon, so my mail thing must be OK?
This is confusing.

Just a thought ... the photoshop emails are from about.com and could very possibly contain java scripted stuff, or even flash junk. I don't know what you'd see if you viewed the code, but if you can see the html code, that might be helpful.

The few html newsletters I sub to, go to my gmail acct where my browser handles all the stuff.

I guess this is what I want?  To view some HTML in the mail, and then click on the links to go the browser?
Ive always done it that way and everything has always worked 100%, not a bit of trouble with anything. Anything is viewable.
(I do get tired of the youtube and junk that friends send, but I dont view it in the email nor download the attachment unless I know its something that I would like.
And some indeed is funny.)

So I will just leave everything alone, the way its set up. Hey, if it aint broke,,,,,

And will assume that those remote 2 emails that complained that my mail only read text, are in error.
As out of thousands they are only 2.  So it must be on their end.
Mac Mail works great, and they are probably using some other system, like something Windows or whatever.
So thats the end of worry for me, its their problem.

Most likely, your mail reader is reading HTML mail just fine--but the message you received from medicinecabinetshop.com is not formatted correctly.

I have seen many examples of HTML emails that are malformed--they contain incorrect HTML that does not meet HTML standards. Some email programs can figure them out anyway; some can't. It's all up to the programmer who's creating the email program how to handle malformed HTML.

Apple's Mail program is pretty strict; it tends to reject HTML that is not written correctly. So I bet that the people at medicinecabinetshop.com wrote bad HTML in their email, and so you're not seeing the HTML.

The only way to tell for sure would be for you to go to Mail, click on the mail message, and from the View menu choose Message->Raw Source. Then paste that raw source in a post here and someone can probably tell you if it is 'correct' HTML or not.

Here it is below,,,,,,,,,,,its awfully long, sorry, but it will be interesting to see what is going on.
Its sure time that I took a class in HTML, its soooooo important and I know that I really need to get on the ball.
I will sign up for this one right away or one like it!

A few quick notes:
1. The text that says "You are reading this message..." is not in the text you supplied.
2. The text that says "Your order has been submitted..." is in the text you supplied. But it appears to be from another html document. It is in some html that starts with "<div align='center'>" it then defines a table with the text in the only "<tr><td></td></tr>" in it. It then closes the div with the required "</div>". But that is not how an html file should start. That may be what is 'choking' Mail ( and probably any other html rendering engine.  An html document must start with the correct 'header' tags and "<html> <body>" and then the content, it must then end with the appropriate closing tags: "</body>" and "</html>". The snippet of code at the start of the message is just that; a snippet, not anywhere near complete html.
3. The displayed text includes a lot of "09" and "3D" 'code'. These are merely the hexadecimal codes for "tab" and "=" characters. Since the text also includes "=" characters as well as the hex codes for them, this may also be confusing the html rendering engine of Mail. In essence, the engine would be seeing "==" between an attribute and its value.
Without cleaning up the code ( removing all the hex character codes ) it is difficult to read, but I don't see a closing of the first table ( ...width='600'... ) before the next 'table' is created with a width of 100%, although I do see that table closed there is at least one more in the original table...I hate nested tables that are mainly displaying pure text messages...
5. Before these tables are all closed, the code starts defining more CSS, but it is mostly a duplicate of the prior CSS. That is technically OK, but it seems a waste of code. Perhaps on further reading it may be that the attributes and/or values are changed. dntknw.gif
6. The last part of the code also use "<br />" instead of "<br>" one or the other would be acceptable depending on how the document is set up with the DTD declaration. Of course that DTD is not in the supplied text, which further leads to confusion with the rendering engine.

Overall, it is some of the sloppiest html I have ever had the 'privilege' to view. That it works somewhere seems a minor miracle, IMHO. getsick.gif I can only hope their cabinets are better than their html! coolio.gif

I know enough about html to get myself into trouble! And its use in email may have some 'tricks' that don't apply when used in a browser. Offhand, I suspect the 'code' was cut and pasted from a Word created html document, but that's just a guess.

As for the 'school', I don't think I would pay anyone on the internet for lessons on html. First, there are just too many good books that can get you started and take you as far as you want to go. Second, there are too many good and free sites ( many have been mentioned at TS in past months ) that will let you actually interact with the code snippets you can 'create'.

The main point about html is that it is not a complicated 'language' like C or even Basic. It has a very limited number of commands compared to programming languages. You can probably build a nice site with no more than 18 basic 'tags' with their appropriate values. Much of what you will use you have already done right here in the message box for making posts and replies ( links, formatting [bold, italic, font selection, font size font color], lists [ numbered or not], etc. ). You really can do it yourself with just a few hours a week. Much of what passes for great web sites is mainly graphics that lock one in to one look and take more resources and time from your computer to use and display. Keep things simple while you are learning.

Hi ABD,  You make me feel as if I could really do it. I do have 2 good books, and have made several sites that came out OK.
I just need the push that a class gives me to do more.
Seems that since retirement, there is so much going on in our lives, that things that I dont schedule(like learning HTML), dont get worked on. But a class would 'grab' me and make me schedule it and work on it. I think Ive got too many things I to do, and my husband has ideas all the time.  Bike, kayak, whatever,,,,,,,,
 Incentive perhaps is what I need?
Well anyway, with the fall and winter coming on, it will be a project.
And I sure have photos to put up!  Pbase.com makes me lazy too.
