Darn darn darn,
 I just got it fixed, Apple paid for the new Power Supply, as its a problem for this particular G5.
About 5 minutes ago, it just plain stopped.  No fan noise, no picture, nothing.
So I unplugged it.
No smell though, nothing cooked off.

I had bought the G-Tech external hard drive and found that the cable supplied with it was FW 800, which is usless for it.
So I had to drive down and purchase a FW 400, and today I was going to put all my pictures onto it.  

I am assuming that this problem has nothing to do with its hard drive, that its another power supply problem, so I am hoping that my pictures are not lost.

Washed out weekend, dead computer, baaaaddddddd day.

There is a "procedure" for resetting the SMU on the logic board on G5 iMAC's (which is what I think you are talking about):

I just got it going!!!!!!

I am going to get that external Hard Drive right now hooked up!

He didnt replace the logic board, so thats the answer.

Oh! darn again,,,,,,  Made a nasty snap noise and quit again before I had the doggone hard drive unpacked.  Probably about 5 minutes elapsed.

Should I reset it again and fire it up after I have the FW hd already hooked up and try to grab everything before it poops out again?  Or am I taking a chance on losing everything or really damaging the poor machine.
I wont do anything till I hear from you, I sure dont want to hurt the thing, and perhaps Fred should put in a new logic board first????

Um, Jane, given that it just made a nasty snapping noise and shut down again, I think I'd leave well enough alone and take it back on Tuesday for another look-see. A nasty snapping noise sounds like there might be a short in there somewhere. I don't think you should have to repeatedly reset the SMU. sad.gif

That is what it sounded like, so I will take your advice and leave it for Fred to fix at the store.
He just emailed me and thought the same.
I could corrupt my pictures if it were to fail during the transfer to the external HD.

If you have a extra PC laying around, you can take the HD out of the case and use Mac Drive to transfer them.

Sounds exactly like the G5 we had at work.
It was new but i had to put in some harddrives (IT guy at work took them out before cause he needed them, gave us the empty G5's with spare harddrives he just received).
After installing the drive i hit the power button, there was that snap noise and... i blanked out two rooms with about 15 computers in dry.gif
Took them 3 hours to find someone who actually new what safety plug it was at the main board (in a cartonboard factory) so my second go was after lunch already.
I warned everybody this time, since i just had to test and also already called that electricity guy to standby, hit the powerbutton and yup... all went again.
Thinking it was the harddrive i took it out, installed the second we had (we got two G5's at that time), made my calls again and hit the powerbutton.
All is well... so i was thinking the drive is screwed and send it back to our office in Antwerp asking a new drive for the second G5.
The mac worked well for about a month, and one morning i wanted to activate it and there was it again sad.gif
Lucky enough the people at the factory already learned from their mistakes by giving us (the small room where we sat) a different electricity net than the people next door so not much harm this time.
But this time, even plugging the electricity cable from the G5 in the wall socket was enough to blow the plugs in the room.

I bet your G5 also has the bad power supply build in and i would demand the people to change it again.
We had it changed and after that the G5 ran smoothly again.

I think I will let Fred do it at the store, because if I open it up and do stuff, the warrantee will end.
I was almost going to put the power supply in myself, as the place I bought it from in Vermont, SmallDog Electronics, was going to send me the power supply and the logic board for free.
But they, Fred, and TS, did warn me that if I did it, and something else went bad, then it would no longer be free repairs.
I did buy the Applecare for $160 at the time of purchase.
I did put the picture I was working on, onto this one, so I can at least continue with that one.

It will be interesting to see if the new power supply is bad as well as the logic board.
Yes, I could take the hard drive out and put it into one that I have down cellar, but its got OS 9 on it,,,,,,
I will wait, Fred will have it done quickly.

This does sound like a power issue and leaving it alone until checked/replaced might be the answer.  I'm sorry I stirred it but this "reset" is Apple's solution to doing it (they should've put a reset button accessible to the end user into every unit made; it's folly for them not to do so).  dry.gif

Hi Gunug, Dont be sorry you stirred it, because you gave me the answer!  If the SMU can be reset, there are plenty of situations that it will help, and its good to know that it can be done.  It is also the way to troubleshoot this.  Now we know its the power supply and the logic board for sure, and I will ask Fred to replace them both.
My husband thought it might be a good idea to check the wiring for a short, but that I will leave to Fred too.  There are a lot of wires crammed into these things, and I dont want to go messing with it, even tho it might be quite visible if that is the problem.  Fred will be able to test/measure the output of the power supply, whereas I cant.
TS is the most educational Mac forum anywhere!  I would be lost without you all.

My daughter has the iMac G5 and she had a real power problem.  It would shuts down all the time at home, but when she brought it into the Apple Store, it NEVER happened for them.

Finally, after several calls, and a lot of frustration, they replaced the power supply and she has had no problems every since.

I think I should ask Fred to replace the logic board too.  He probably would do it anyway at this point.
Ive a retired friend who consults for a power supply company, just tried to call him, but their car broke down just south of Boston. I don't want to bother them today.
But I think that we should replace everything. Anyway.
