IE "internet config error " (prior post had mistake)
« on: October 08, 2006, 11:22:46 PM »
I use Internet Explorer with Outlook Express on my Mac, system 9.2. When I tried to get online, authentication failed, so I shut down, unplugged for a minute and started up. Then I was able to get online, but the following problem occured: When I clicked the "mail" icon on top of the IE browser, it said: "an internet config error occured. Please verify the mail and news settings." However, when I clicked the Outlook Express application itself, I have no trouble sending or receiving email. Why is the IE "mail" icon not triggering Outlook Express to open?

Internet Explorer automatically uses Internet Config (Apple's systemwide Internet preferences file)  as its preferences file, so users can set their Internet and browser preferences in one easy location. If the prefs are corrupted or not correct it won't know which Mail Client you want to use when you click the icon.

Probably the best thing to do is open up your Internet Control Panel and put in the necessary information so IE knows that Outlook is your default Email application. There is a pull down at the bottom of the Email tab window to do just that. Make sure IE is not running when you do this or you will have to quit it and reopen. You might even have to restart, I'm not sure. It's been so long since I've used 9.

I would also like to recommend using iCab instead of IE. Be sure to choose the 9 version on the download page.

If this doesn't work you may have to trash the Internet prefs-but before you do that be sure you have all the information written down so you can reinsert the necessary data to access your ISP and your email.
