Get Info - Open With
« on: October 10, 2006, 07:22:22 PM »
Almost every time I click on a file and Get Info, I get duplicate names of possible applications to open the file with.

Here's an example opening a PDF file:

How can I eliminate all this rubbish?

Tiger 10.4.7.

Thanks, Jack

Resetting "Launch Services" will get rid of the problem.

You can get info. on how to reset Launch Services here.

Jack,

I too noticed that duplicate issue after using SuperDuper (SD). So I asked Dave Nanian, the developer, if he had insight. His reply:

"The reason you see multiple items, after using SuperDuper!, is because you're creating new copies of the applications (on the backup). Since the paths to these applications are different, LaunchServices puts them in again."

I presume this is also the case with Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC). dntknw.gif

As Bill noted, rebuilding the Launch Services Database with Cocktail (or similar utilities) is a solution.

Alas, if you are not using SD or CCC, I know not why you are creating the duplicates. huh.gif

But if you are using SD or CCC, you may well need/want to rebuild the Launch Services database from time to time as the condition will recur. OTOH, I know of no adverse consequence from ignoring the condition.

Just remember, there's no such thing as a free launch. Groaner.gif

I noticed those duplicates too since I too cloned my HD with SuperDuper.

I noticed them a while ago and just left them....maybe now I'll fix 'em. smile.gif

Harv,

Thanks for the info from Dave Nanian!

That surely explains the phenomena.

And, yes, I'm probably one of SuperDuper!'s most avid fans. Fantastic software. I use it several times a week, Sometimes maybe too often. It's so easy to use and FAST! And I value my data and the time I have spent on it.
