Hi Krissel, Wow, thats neat!  Those pictures are really great, the grasses with the total black background are really unique.  Stuff like this is fun.
I wish they told us how to do it, inotherwords, could we do this with our own cheap scanners?
Put the grass or flowers in and put a black paper behind it?
I might just try this with our grandkids this weekend.


This site is good, NYTimes Science, I know my husband would like it.
Ive had trouble viewing it before, but you have given us a link that works, so I will forward it to my husband.

The guy used a copier but the principle is the same for a scanner. To eliminate the light  you would need a black cloth rather than paper. And the material should be something that would tend to absorb any light from the copier/scanner and not reflect it.

The NYTimes requires a free registration to view much of its content but I emailed the article to myself which comes with a link that bypasses the registration. That's so anyone here can see it without having to register.

Thanks for the instruction, I do have some black cloth, well its dark blue, but should work.
Have lots of flowers going to seed and grasses too.
The grandkids will have a ball with this!

Yes, I did register with NYTimes, but never used it much as my husband has so much science stuff that he never looked at it much.
He does the Scientific American and Science News sites and forwards the stuff to me that he thinks I would want.
But he missed this one!

That's funny... as I was coming into the house after picking up the paper this morning I was musing to myself that I should try scanning some of the colorful leaves lying all over the place right now! It's something I've never tried, but I remember being intrigued by an article I saw a few years ago about a botanist who had made a huge collection of scans and in the process had created some beautiful art.
