LCD Monitor went black!
« on: October 10, 2006, 12:57:08 AM »
While I was working on my Mac, the LCD monitor just went black!
Tried pressing many keys, but it would not come back on. Just the little light on the bottom right of the monitor showed me there was still power. Checked all cables... Nothing was loose.

Clicked and moved my mouse at random but nothing happened. Screen stayed black.

So, I held the G4 power button in for a few seconds to shut it down, and then booted it up again.
The LCD screen came back on! The little light is now off on the monitor.

Seems to be working fine again. What the heck happened? Is it a sign of something to come?
I am the only one that uses my Mac at home.

G4/1.25GHz.

It's possible that the monitor went to sleep.  Most monitors seem to have some sort of "green" energy saving setting built in.  It's also possible that the whole computer went into hibernation/sleep mode.

Happened to me once, but before the black, there was a "poof" (on a CRT). If you didn't have a "poof", that's good.

It's been working fine since. Only happened the one time. So far! ;-)

But, what is that small light at the bottom right of the Apple 20" Cinema Display?
It was on when the monitor went black. It's off now.

Krissel,
I guess it is telling me that the computer is asleep when the light is on.
Yet I couldn't do anything to wake it up, other than reboot.

Seems all fine now.
Thanks :-)

No noise, no smell, so I think that you dont have that powersupply/logic board problem.
If its running OK, and does not replicate the problem(or smell or go pop), then you are OK.

But here is the info just in case,

Is yours an "Igloo", Raven. If so, I have the same model.

I'm always surprised when it slows down a bit, to find that I have 20 or more applications running in the background (because it's on 24/7 mol. So I'll proceed to Force Quit all that haven't been used for several days and the speed comes right up. It "wakes up" from sleep a lot faster too.

Don't know whether that applies to your Mac, but it might be worth checking.

eek2.gif Why the 'heavy hand' technique? Hold the command key down ( and keep it down untill I say to release it ) and press the tab key. There's your running apps list as larger icons. Each press of the tab key will select the next icon to the right ( shift-tab goes the other way ). When you find an app you want to quit "q" key. It will quit ( remember, command-q is the Mac standard way of quiting any app ). When all unrequired apps have been quit, tab to the app you want to use again, if not already selected, and let go of the command key. You're done, no mouse required, no window left open, no electrons have been harmed. smile.gif
