HP laserjet 5MP postscript printer
« on: October 20, 2006, 11:44:38 AM »
The G4 Tower that I just put the newest Tiger in its tank, dislikes our daughters HP laserjet 5MP printer

Its got the old serial connector, and its a level 1 Postscript, and in this link,
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106516
I see that it wont work with the new Mac OS at all, even tho the driver is there.
Only level 2 and 3 work.

Is there any way to work around this?  Its a great printer and they need it for work projects.
I am not very good at figuring out printer stuff, when her husband gets home from work, perhaps he will have a way.
But you people here might have a solution so she can get it running this afternoon.

The only thing she can do now, is network the old PC with the Mac and print from the old PC.
Thanks,
Jane

Jane,

I had to purchase an Asante 'Micro AsantePrint' and hook my HP LJ5MP up thru an ethernet hub when I got my QS 2002 G4.

It's been working great ever since in all versions of OS 9 and OS x thru 10.4.7.

Altho it may be better to buy a new inexpensive HP or Brother printer that has USB 2. That probably would print faster.

Hi Jack,  Thank you!
I will pass this info right along to my daughter, and she can get one.
Actually this printer was over $1000 so they really didnt want to have to replace it.  Theyve also got my old Inkjet for their regular stuff, USB.
Youve saved the day,
Jane

I gave away a perfectly good LaserJet 5MP a few months ago after it had gathered dust for over a year. It worked well with Panther, through a USB-to-serial adapter and an ethernet hub. But I was never able to make it work with Tiger.

My solution was to purchase a LaserJet 1012 USB printer for around $150 new, and I've been very happy with it.

In your case, it might be worth $150 or so just to be rid of the frustration.

Joe

P.S. I always keep a new toner cartridge on hand for any laser printer I have. I sold the spare 03A cartidge (from the 5MP) last week on eBay for $41. Good things happen!
I'm not a complete idiot -- a few parts are missing!

I love the lifespan of HP printers
We have an old 4L in school
that was manufactured in October of  1994
and still works awesome!

I've only bought HP's for their reliability
a LaserJet 5 should still be in mint working condition today

I'm actually back from hiatus (and its about darn time too)!
