Upgrade from USB 1.1 to 2.0 How?
« on: October 22, 2006, 05:19:15 PM »
I am running an iMac PowerPC G4 800 MHz with 17" flatscreen. The computer has three 1.1 USB ports. I need 2.0 USB ports to run certain new programs. Is there anyway to upgrade or do I need to consider purchasing a new computer? Dumb question probably but I'll appreciate any helpful responses.

Thanks.

Jim,

You need to install a USB 2.0 card in one of the PCI slots.  They're quite reasonably priced, last I looked [I put one into my MDD for about $12 as I recall].

Whoops! I missed the "i" there in 'iMac' - I guess my eyes ARE getting worse...

My bad.

Kelly's right, if you need USB 2.0, you'll need to replace the iMac w/ a newer one or a DT that can accept a PCI card.

Are you sure that you need USB 2.0 functionality?

For what it is worth, I just bought a Canon scanner, which says it works on USB 2.0.  It is connected to my Igloo iMac in the regular USB connection in the back, and works just fine as far as I can tell.
I'm sure it must depend on what device you plug in.

Thanks for the helpful comments. The only thing I really need USB 2.0 for is EyeTV Hybrid. No TV picture without it.  thanx.gif
