Setting up e-mail account

I have a 350 Mhz iMac. I have just put in a new and bigger hard drive (80 GB) and installed OS 10.2 on it.

Now I want to set up my e-mail account. The e-mail program that comes with OS 10.2 is called Mail.

When I click on the Mail icon at the bottom of my screen, a box opens up. It says "Welcome to Mail."

Then there is information to be filled out (I use x here to protect my identity):

My name: xxx xxx
Email address: xxx@xxx
Incoming Mail Server: mail.xxx.xxx
User Name: xxxxx
Password: ********
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.xxx.xxx

When I hit OK another box opens up and says:

"The POP server 'mail.xxx.xxx' is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the 'Incoming Mail Server' field. If it still doesn't respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.

"If you continue, you may not be able to receive email."

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I would call your ISP and have them walk you through the setup. Sometimes it's something very minor, but the ISP might be able to help you figure it out quickly. When I've helped my dad and a few others setup their new computers, this was how we quickly got those issues resolved.

How are you accessing the internet?
Can you presently view web sites with your browser?

Yes, this at first can be very confusing.  I have several ISPs and several email addresses, and I wanted them ALL to come, 'funnel', in to MacMail.
So I picked the ISP that I wanted to handle it, called them, and they led me thru the process of setting up the additional accounts.
The cable ISP here was helpful, but I did not want to use them for my mail, so you can pick .mac or another one.  You will have the option to go to your cable or DSL site to look at your webmail that gets deposited there, to see if youve missed anything that gets filtered out. And setting the filters up for each one, whew,,,,,,
I still am somewhat confused, but it WORKS. I will be interested to see more instructions posted here, so that hopefully I will understand it better.  I will be watching.  I did need the guidance of the ISP though, to get them all included.
Now that its all set up, and working so well, I am rather reluctant to mess with it, without the tech support of my other, best, ISP.

runs fine

I have no problem accessing the Web with my browser. It's just my e-mail.

The problem with contacting my ISP (www.110.net) is that they only provide online support.

They do not provide support over the phone.

This is why they charge so low for their subscription ($8.50/month).

I e-mailed them and they e-mailed me back saying that they could not tell what was wrong since I seem to have put in all the right info.

Is 10.3.9 a free upgrade? If so, I'll definitely do so.

This is my first time using OS 10 so please bear withy me.

Cross check the info in the other iMac with the one you're using. Sometimes it is a minor typo or period misplaced. Each ISP has their own version of incoming and outgoing names for server mailboxes. ATT has 'postoffice' for incoming, Optonline uses 'mail' and so on. The SMPT  may differ as well. Doublecheck the settings for the server using the dropdown by the Outgoing (Edit Server settings).  Also make sure you 'Save' the info before trying to get mail.

Try deleting that account and creating a new one.



No, 10.3.9 is not a free upgrade from 10.2. You need to purchase a 10.3 install CD, code named 'Panther'.

I am using 10.3.9 on the Mac that I have the email accounts on.
And 10.4.8 on the one which I use just the webmail.

Great! Your connection is fine. The problem is in the info entered in the problematic Mac.

If possible, printout the windows showing the server ( both Incoming and Outgoing ) info on the email-capable Mac. Then compare, closely, what you have in the enail-challenged Mac. It might be best to have a second party/person do the comparing, even if they have absolutely no computer experience; somwtimes we tend to see what we think[/] we see instead of what is actually in front of our nose!
