OT, storm in New England
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:29:41 AM »
What a storm we had yesterday!  And the winds have switched from ESE to WSW today and are really strong, gusting to 60mph.
Just got a call from our kids and my brother from our vacation cottage in Maine, they had gone up Friday to close it up for the season, put the shutters on and drain the water system.
No power there since yesterday, but weve a kerosene stove and plenty of lamps, fireplace and gas grill.
But the interesting thing is, that there are 4 big pine trees across the access road, which is private, so no way to get out!
Theyve got plenty of kerosene and food, and cell phones, so we wont worry. They are having a great time actually!  I will post some pictures next week.

The wind is now less in Maine than it's here, thank goodness.

Hello,

Yes NE got hit in certain places with the Cape being hit pretty hard. RI had about 10,000 homes lose their power during the worst part of the storm. By 11PM though, power was restored to all but around 100.

Today, in RI we are supposed to experience some very strong winds, so I am hoping that we don't lose power.

Blessings and Prayers to you and yours,
Myrna

Our friends in Falmouth lost power too, for about 3 hours, but up here in North Falmouth, ours only flickered.
My husband was ready to fire up the generator if we had needed it.
The temperature was quite warm here anyway.

Yes, the kids and my brother are 'stuck' till they get the chain saw running and saw their way out.  They aren't concerned, as our grandkids dont care if they miss a day or 2 of school.  If they run out of food, they can walk out to the main road, and there are plenty of people in that tiny little town who would give them a ride to the grocery, its about 5 miles to a tiny convienence store, they have canned goods, bread, milk and stuff, and ice.

Jane,

That is good news. Hoping that it doesn't get too wild today for you. I've been to Falmouth. Good thing that you have a generator as a backup.

Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

Wow. I knew a storm was expected - but hadn't heard anything about it. Sounds like your kiddo's are okay and enjoying the adventure.

They called around noon, and looks like they will be able to get out by this afternoon.
All the power is off in that part of Maine, so even tho the wires are tangled up in the downed trees, nothing is live.
The grandkids loved the storm!  The waves crashing up on the island with towering spray, high tide was spectacular.
Glad everybody is OK, but I feel bad for people who have no kerosene stoves, and hand operated water pumps, as we have.
