. . . Next week's matchups: . . . Ohio State @ Illinois, Champaign, Ill.
When the Bucks play the Illini in Champaign, Dolphin, there no shortage of special meaning roundabout these parts. In the '50s, that game was usuually scheduled as the 3d or 4th contest of the season (which
didn't start in late August!).
In a beautiful October of 1954, Lillian and I drove from Columbus to my home in downstate Illinois and on Saturday we attended the game (which Ohio State and "Hopalong" Cassidy and the gallant lads in Scarlet and Gray won handily – sorry, Gregg).
Then, it was back to Bloomington for a party that evening hosted by my parents to celebrate our engagement. Since most of the guests at that party were U of I grads, Lil and I took some pains to focus our enthusiasm on what was
going to happen in December in Columbus, rather than what had transpired earlier that afternoon in Champaign.
It's always made that game (especially when it's played in Champaign) the stimulus for an abundance of happy memories, just like it's doing right about now!
