One of the newletters, i.e., ads I get advertises a
 
Seagate 750GB ST3750640AS SATA300 Bare Hard Drive
Great Deal! $359.00

As I'm starting to shop for a new system, I'm thinking.....

I'm assuming that they're saying it's an OEM drive; one that isn't sold in a retail package with paperwork and usually a CD with software on it that allows you to partition and set up the drive.  I saw that drive on Pricewatch.com for $338.50 with shipping/handling included.

It could mean two things. What gunug said, an OEM drive or they just meant to specify that it has no enclosure.

"Bare" usually means it has no cables (or a CD - which is usually of no importance to a Mac owner anyway) and doesn't come in a pretty box. Since the new Macs all have the cabling you need in them already and most of us toss the pretty boxes and can't use the CDs, "bare" is just ducky. biggrin.gif

That is one honking drive!! Granted - prices have dropped incredibly and it is possible to do even better on GB/dollar basis:

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4795199 for instance - $300GB for a mere $80.

But if you want to absolutely max out your internal storage, then the bigger the better. Do make sure that whatever you get will be recognized by either the Mac or the enclosure. I've seen some enclosures which will only take up to 300GB for instance. Not sure whether there are any restrictions with the newer Macs; if there are, I haven't heard about them.

If noise is a consideration - of the large capacity drives, the Western Digitals are currently the quietest and the are Seagates are currently the noisiest:

Not to spoil the fun, but I would rather have two or three 300G drives than one big one. That way I can have several backups. I couldn't bear putting a couple hundred Gs of data on a drive an have it go bust without a backup. Now imagine 6 or 700 Gs being lost. eek2.gif

I would only get a drive that big if I could afford two of them. Then, too, backup and repair on a drive that size would take a looong time.

But if you need a large contiguous space like that, go for it.  smile.gif
