Hiya All!

I know it's been awhile, but after last friday's sales (or during, rather) I decided that the time was right, and lo and behold, I am typing this on my Shiny White MacBook. At the moment I'm waiting on the batteries to die for the purposes of calibration. It always takes longer when I want it to happen smile.gif

Also I couldn't help but notice that mine is a 'Core 2 Duo' - Anyone know what that 2 is for?

I've already noticed a large increase in airport signal quality, compared with my metal powerbook.

Uh-oh I think it's about to die... better go!

Congratulations Phil. smile.gif

The Core 2 means it's newer than the Core Duo. smile.gif

My next Mac will likely be the Shiny White MacBook 2.0 GHz model.

What does it mean when it says that MacIntel models can boot only from a GPT hard drive? Will I need to get new external drives in order for them to be bootable, as with SuperDuper??

Thanks.

GPT refers to the GUID Partition Table (Globally Unique Identifier...you know things are getting nuts when they start making acronyms out of the acronyms...), which is the partitioning scheme used by the newer Intel machines. Pre-Intel Macs use APM (Apple Partition Map).

There seems to be a great deal of argument about whether or not it is possible to boot an Intel machine from an external drive formatted with APM. I haven't gotten to the bottom of the arguments yet, though it would appear that it is possible, providing you're using a Firewire drive. What you need to do beyond that I haven't yet sorted out. At any rate, it isn't the DRIVE but the partitioning that may cause problems - and that can be solved using Disk Utility. No need to buy another drive, though if you have older Macs as well, you'll need to figure out what to do if you want to use the same drive to back up more than one machine. If I figure this out (because I am now in this same boat) I'll let you all know. If anyone has a good, uncomplicated source of RELIABLE instructions, please post them. I've found too much arguing so far...

Looks like you got on the 'train' just in time! According to this post, Apple has stopped production of the non-glossy screens for a while.

Congrats!!  Welcome to the 2Duo clan.  Or should that be the 4 clan?  wink.gif
