iPhoto Library "migration"
« on: December 14, 2006, 08:58:16 PM »
The new box just arrived.

Setting it up involves first cleaning-up the G4 Igloo it will replace, so I can give it in pristine condition to my daughter for her kids' photography business. She's about to become a switcher.

About the only thing I want to carryover to the G4's soon to be eformatted drive is a copy of my iPhoto Library, with about 1900 photos, many of which she put there when visiting. The remainder of that drive is going to be wiped, with 10.4 freshly reinstalled. What do I do to include my old iPhoto Library in her new OS? Please.

The Library is on a SuperDuper clone of the G4's "former" partitions. How does one "cherry pick" just the Library from the other 100 gigs of "stuff"?

If all you want to do is to 'insert' your current 1900 photos as the default collection for your newly installed set up for your daughter, it should be as simple as copying the "iPhoto Library" folder into the same place as the normal install places it.

Theoretically, it is in your Home->Pictures directory. Mine seems to be in the Hard Drive->Pictures directory. dntknw.gif

Where ever it is in the new install, place the one you got from your old install in the same place. iPhoto should find things to be 'normal'. If not, take two aspirin and call me in the morning ( but not too early ).

That sounds really difficult, Guys.   coolio.gif

Seriously though, thanks much. I thrive on reassurance!  biggrin.gif  I think my SanDisk flash drive will come on pretty handy.

Only one important rule: Do not even think about moving only some of the files in the iPhoto Library, where ever you find it. There are over a hundred files ( in your case probably thousands! ) and they all are directly related to each other ( talk about large families! ).

You might also be interested to know that you do not now have to keep the images inside the iPhoto Library folder. You can now tell iPhoto to leave them where you put them and the app will simply create thumbnails for itself and aliases of the originals. But you can still create havoc by moving the originals without telling iPhoto; it still cannot dynamically update its database. wallbash.gif

Do I understand correctly that applies to the "Library" as such, or are both the Library and all its subordinate "Albums" treated thusly?

Any pruning needs to (absolutely only should) be accomplished before any moving is undertaken?

Thanks for the special heads-up, ABD.

Exactly, any and all changes/deletions/editing/naming/etc. should only be done in iPhoto before even thinking about moving the files to an external device for later retrieval. Move the whole/complete/intact "iPhoto Library" folder/directory/thang, all at once, totally, and completely, in toto ( not as pieces or parts ). smile.gif

By the way, I'll be unavailable for the next month or two, be sure and let me know how this move works, I figure by then, you'll have all the 'kinks' worked out! flower-smilie.gif And some of us are still interested in being adopted, so we can get in line for your 'hand-me-downs'! harhar.gif
