A bit pricey perhaps, US $58.90 including S&H (just for the upgrade). But stay tuned, Amazon and the likes may discount it in a few days... dntknw.gif

In the past, I have found this tool invaluable. For me, it's a "must have", so I'll not complain (much). coolio.gif

Yeah, considering I *just* paid out for 3.0 and the disk hasn't even arrived. If this works on my *mac*, I sure hope the upgrade is FREE.

I just bought version 3.0.3 a few weeks ago as an upgrade from version 2 for OS 9 (which I sold for $25). Since Alsoft is located in Texas, I also had to pay sales tax.

I sent Alsoft an email asking why they didn't tell me to wait a few weeks for v4. Also asked if I could exchange. I'll let you know what they reply.
Cheers, Tom

From MacWorld:

DiskWarrior 4 goes Universal

By Peter Cohen

Alsoft has released DiskWarrior 4, the latest major release of its hard disk maintenance, repair and recovery software. It’s available for $99.95; upgrades cost $49.95.

DiskWarrior enables you to find missing documents and files; can rebuild hard disk drive directories and salvage files and folders; allows you to compare your disk before and after a recovery is done; and verifies your repaired directory to make sure it’s free of errors.

New in this release of DiskWarrior is Universal binary support for Intel and PowerPC-based Macs. It’s also significantly faster than before, according to Alsoft. DiskWarrior 4 now repairs invalid file permissions, and includes an additional suite of file and folder tests.

DiskWarrior 4 sports myriad other improvements, as well, including the ability to identify corrupted preferences (.plist files), detects and repairs more disk problems than previous versions, repairs and rebuilds FileVault-protected volumes, supports case-sensitive file names, repairs and rebuilds Attribute B-trees, repairs Access Control Lists (ACLs) and more.
Cheers, Tom

4.0 must be rolling out quickly now, as I also received mine .... today.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, biggest reason to buy or upgrade is that the new version 4 is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than version 3.  Currently, I have only run it from my main hard drive against one of my back-up/clones, but the speed difference is quite noticeable.  The Quicktime problem is resolved ..... but looking through the package contents, it seems like the Alsoft's fix was to remove the sound file.  Anyway, so far, so good.

I. Admin:

With no advance shipping notice, my DW 4.0 arrived 12/11/06 via priority mail (ordered when first announced).

The CD comes in a thin polyurethane case, rather than a paper sleeve.

The CD cover is printed with the owner’s serial number (but not his name).

As before, if one is going to install (drag & drop) DW, Alsoft recommends it be in the Utilities folder.

I have yet to read the documentation, so what constraints, if any, there may be re running DW on a network, I dunno.

II. Technical (on a 24” Intel iMac and on a G4 DP 800, both 10.4.8):

Before installing, I used FileBuddy to find and remove all DW 3.x files, including the invisible ones. What, if any difference this makes, I dunno.

As suggested, I first started up from the DW (install) CD—a very long process.

My first run (on the 24” iMac) revealed 35% of the items were out of order and a few creation dates needed repair. I suspect (guess) that the high number of items out of order had to do with my using Migration Assistant, performing an Archive & Install, and numerous system updaters…

DW then did it’s thang as expected, but much faster.

Subsequent runs revealed no problems.

I have since installed DW on all volumes, including a FW external drive, and DW was able to verify/repair all other volumes, excluding the boot drive of course.

Journaling was not affected, e.g., it remained in its enabled state.

Just how well DW resolves major directory problems, I dunno.

III. Conclusion:

At first glance, it looks like another great product from Alsoft. cheer.gif

FWIW:

I was at my local Apple VAR 12/13/06 talking with one of the service techs. He noted that he had a 12” PB (I don’t know what model) that had a badly corrupted directory and for the last 6 days and nights, DW 3.x had been running in an effort to resurrect the directory. Finally, the tech quit DW 3.x.

DW 4.0 had just arrived, so he gave that a try. Three hours later the customer’s PB was back in service.

As Zapom noted, it is much, much faster. clap.gif

This is probably a dumb question, but Ive never used Disk Warrior, and asked my local Mac store if I needed it.
He said, "No, so dont buy it now, but if you ever need it, just come in and get it."

Is it something that I should be using regularly as preventative maintenance?
Or wait till something goes awry?

I shall get it then.  I hope to visit our local Mac store after Christmas, and start eyeing the new 24" Macs.  I really hope they do a class in GarageBand, as I would like to get a nice new keyboard soon.

Jane: you might ask what the grizzled one is saying yes to before making your purchase. That said, methinks your guess is right and therefore that you are doing the right thing.

I wonder if DW will be slow coming for Leopard.
