How to send a few words in mail message in color
« on: January 06, 2007, 01:24:31 PM »
I have my mail prefs set to Rich Text, and I used to be able to highlight a word or sentence inside the mail message, and apply a color to it.
Now that wont work any more even tho I have left the prefs set to Rich Text and not Plain Text.
I am using Panther and this version of mac-mail, 1.3.11 (v622/624)
Anyone have a suggestion to what I did to mess up the ability to do this any more?
Thank you,

Sounds strange Jane.

I am running Tiger but I opened up Mail.  Started a new message.  Typed a few words then highlighted on of them.  Clicked the colors icon which is in the menu bar in that window and selected a color.  Worked fine.

Can't say right now what yours would of stopped working.

Hi Ryan,
Its really odd, as when I apply the color, it works just fine, then I send any message to myself, and it comes out with color just fine, just like it looks when I send.  But when I mail it to my other Mac to my gmail account, or a friends gmail, it comes out just plain black.  Same with my husband's old Mac(os 9) using Netscape Mail.
I guess it depends on what mail program the recipient is using?

I will experiment around more with different programs.
Thanks,
Jane

If the recipient has HTML email turned off, then all the recipient sees is plain text, in whatever font he/she has selected to display messages with.

I wasn't aware until now that Mail actually sends rich text rather than HTML - and not all email programs understand RTF. That may be the issue. I would doubt that gmail or any web-based email knows what to know to do with RTF.

Hi Paddy,
I think you have solved my problem, these people mostly are using gmail and outlook distress.
So I must figure out a way to get my emails to them with color.
Do you think if I turn the lesson quizes into a .pdf after I have put my answers into it in color, that this would show up in color in their anemic email programs?
I have to figure something out, as thats the way we have to turn in our classwork, by email in color.
Thank you,
Jane

Anything you send as an attachment will be unaffected by any appearance settings in the email or the email program used - a PDF would definitely do the trick. smile.gif

PDF is the answer!  Thank you. I just heard back from my instructor with her gmail, the .pdf files came thru fine.
I just wonder why everything I send to Mac people with Mac-mail comes thru with the color, but nothing else does, is Mac that far ahead of the pack?  Are they all in the dark ages?  Gmail, webmail, AOL, heavens they cant be so inept that they cant receive a colored email?

It's not gmail (can't speak for the rest), it's MAIL from Apple and the way it handles "colored email".

I just composed a fancy email using Thunderbird and sent it to myself at gmail. It came through just fine and shows up as designed. BUT - Thunderbird composes in html not rtf. I think Apples off the mark with MAIL. wink.gif

I don't think it has anything to do with being inept - web-based email is displayed as HTML. Some mail apps, like Entourage, don't have RTF as an option; just HTML, and as far as I know, don't make a translation.

Eudora and Outlook (PC) I presume should show RTF emails correctly as both have the ability to send RTF emails.

Looks like I better go and get Thunderbird if I want to send my classwork emails in color, or just keep the screenshots coming.
Egad, how strange!
I must have been sending my fancy colored emails out to family and friends and they never got the colors, different fonts, or sizes.
What a strange way to Mac to have their mail work in. I cant really understand it, but I do know that I certainly can RECEIVE emails with all sorts of color and fonts from any mail program.
This is realllllly interesting, I have changed my opinion of Mac Mail.
Or is it something about the way that the receiver chooses to view their mail also?
Jane

Will give Thunderbird mail a try tonight before I fall asleep,,,,,,,,thank you all for the help, it is indeed confusing.  It used to work just fine last year.

That is a very big part of it. And not just email ( which was originally, and actually still is, plain text ) but also an important part of designing a web page. You simply must remember that you have absolutely no control over how and with what the viewer uses nor how their prefs are set. Get over it, get used to it.

Color is dependent on the capabilities of the viewers eys, their software and the vagaries of the transmission methods. Keep email as plain text and you'll never have a problem. Don't depend on the 'improvements' some piece of software may hype, if they all don't do, they all won't do it! tongue.gif

Jane, if you want to be sure that someone gets the colored text, you will have to send the text in something other than email. Many people have HTML turned off in their email clients (security concerns and whatnot, though I've continued with it on and never had an issue). PDF for your class assignments is the best choice - for less important stuff, it's up to you. smile.gif

Heard from the instructor, it is fine for me to send her the .pdf lessons. She can view the color perfectly.

And another option that I did this morning, was to send my colored text as an attachment to my gmail on the other Mac.  It came thru fine.

So I guess this is solved, at least for my classwork.
And when we get to the HTML part of the class, I sure will be careful that I view everything I make in all the old browsers as well as the new ones.  I use Firefox and Safari mostly, but so many people still use IE, so I better make things look OK for them too.
This is a lot of fun!
I have made some sites, but nothing is really slick and really nice looking, they are all mostly just to show my pictures and photography.  But after these classes my stuff should look a whole lot better.  Then I will learn Dreamweaver, but not until I have this HTML and CSS stuff learned.
Thank you all for the help, Ive learned a lot about mail and its differences.
Jane

Who says they have to be "slick"? dntknw.gif What's more important: "slick" or "usable/informative"? "Nice looking" and even "slick" are subjective descriptions, anyway. As long as you're doing this for fun, keep it that way—fun. You don't need DW to do that. And the most important thing of any web site, IMHO, is that it conveys the information that you want to provide—your images, humor, thoughts, etc. Stick to that and don't worry about "slick". "Nice looking" is not that hard, but it depends more on artistic judgment than what software you use. In other words, learn the method before the program/software. Then, as a bonus, you'll be able to make an intelligent decision about spending the money on the software! smile.gif

It is all so much fun, I love learning new things, especially in winter when we arent doing our outdoor stuff.
I am taking a HTML/CSS class now, then I will see how I do, make some additions to my pages, then perhaps get Dreamweaver.
I started to make a nice page for our dog pound, but someone beat me to it.  But its a whole lot better than the one I had started.
Click on alumni, see the second dog,
http://www.friendsoffalmouthdogs.org/
and you will see our dog who was one of the first dogs adopted from here.  Oh, do we miss her,,,,,,

Thats the truth, all my pages and sites are about is family, pictures, grandkids, and albums that Ive put together.  I could do this easily with iPhoto and iWeb, just that I want to learn more stuff.
Thanks,
Jane
