OT: Now for something completely different!
« on: January 20, 2007, 04:34:23 AM »

I saw this picture of a 1920's hair dryer at:

http://thrillingwonder.blogspot.com/2007/0...ogy-update.html

They also had a picture of a tube-type radio currently (recently) sold in Japan and referred to in a link to a Japanese webpage.  They talk about "steam-punk" which seems to be a sort of retro-design school that has come from a modern school of science fiction I believe.

They also have a link to a Russian website that has this computer case:

Which is probably a PeeCee (can't read Russian either) inside but really fantastic looking!

The first wave of Thrilling Wonder Stories supplied the name that's in the URL. I'd love this thing:

gunug and Kelly, I didn't realize this stuff has a name! Reading Kelly's links about steampunk, I thought of the movie Wild Wild West, and sure enough, it's mentioned here. The origins of steampunk are interesting, this in particular (which may be mentioned in the Wikipedia links):
QUOTE
There are roughly three main theories about the origin of Steampunk, none of which actually contradict the others.
The first is that Steampunk was essentially created when Walt Disney released his live film adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Though made in the 1950s, the film intentionally retained its Victorian setting and Vernian inventions, as well as retro-recreating modern technologies like atomic power.
Heinlein delved into it often. His British Empire ornithopters on Mars are a hoot.

Great. This will be a Lost Weekend investigating steampunk on the net.

Where do you come up with these things?

I hope your ISP charges a flat rate, and not by the minute!
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

How about this:

A Nixie Tube display module.  This uses a Christmas tree "bubbler" light and a LED scrolling message ballpoint pen that is hooked to the Nixie and scrolls messages through it!  This page has a link to a YouTube video of the thing in operation:
