Firefox 2.0.0.2 problem
« on: March 03, 2007, 05:14:35 PM »
I always use the autofill stuff, but this is interesting,
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070302091107422

Here are their instructions on MacFixIt to fix,

"Make sure "remember sign ons" values are on Follow these steps to make sure that inline autocomplete is turned on:

Type about:config in the URL bar
In the filter field type fill
Look for the item marked browser.urlbar.autoFIll and make sure its value is set to "True"
In the filter field type signon
Look for the items marked signon.rememberSignons and signon.prefillForms and make sure their values are set to "True.""

I got to the part where I found the browser.urlbar thing, but how do you set/change the value from false to true?
If anybody knows how to do this, it might be a good thing for us to do.
Thanks in advance,
Jane

For "True/False", "1/0" type settings, you can usually just double-click that setting and it will automatically revert to the other value.

I decided to wait till they fix the bugs in 2.0.0.2. Thanks for taking the plunge! tongue.gif

Double clicking on "false" for the value of "browser.urlbar.autoFill" should change it to true.

I tried that and it just moved it to another, and had no effect on the one it was supposed to do.
So I left it sitting on my Tiger Mac,,,,,,,,gave up.

I think that I will do as you say, wait for the bug fix.
As I have all the stuff that needs passwords on this mac here.  And nothing is important, its mostly classroom stuff with Firefox.

So much stuff to do and learn!
Bit OT below,,,,,,
We got a toy for one of our grandsons today(Spy something) that had everything from a bionic ear which was a cheap hearing aid, and a ultraviolet light that read stuff, to a lazer, to a motion detector that worked really well, the dog hated it.  And more,,,,,,,much more that is rather interesting.
Toys now are just amazing!  And expensive.

Deja vu, all over again?

Does "double-clicking" work anywhere else? Reason I ask is that sometimes the speed of a "double-click" pref gets clobbered ( sorry for the technical jargon...) and we don't notice it until something like this happens. Check your Keyboard & Mouse pref panel and see if double-clicking works there. OK. Thinking.gif

Double click is fine.   This thing just moved from one to other, I thought it was really strange the way it did that, the highlight moved and the order of them shifted.  I will see what I can do tomorrow.
Thank you,
Jane

Jane,

If you have a two-button mouse or a scroll wheel mouse - or if you can emulate one using keystrokes - instead of double clicking, try right clicking and hitting "Toggle."

I just tried this on << browser.formfill.enable >> and this method changed it from "true" to "false."

But then - double clicking worked on my setup, as well.

Good luck -

Epaminondas

It worked just perfectly this morning, I dont really know why it didnt yesterday, but knowing me, I probably did something out of sequence or goofed somehow.
Thanks,
Jane

Long, but an AppleScript at the bottom.

There's quite a kerfluffle going in a Mozillazine thread or two, such as this one, about the password bug. The change that causes the trouble is to prevent work-arounds at log-in sites that won't allow the computer to remember the password.

I worked around this restriction by using a bookmarks-toolbar javascript bookmarklet called Remember Password. It still works at sites such as my Yahoo throw-away-email address. But Remember Password no longer works at my ISP when I view or retrieve mail via the web.

Apparently thieves had exploited a security hole at MySpace to swipe passwords. MySpace fixed it, but according to angry posters in one of the Mozillazine threads, the Firefox coders care more about one site's now-fixed vulnerability than all the users adversely affected by the change. So it's torches-and-pitchforks time.

But even when the bug causing the passwords to disappear en masse is fixed, those sites that won't allow the computer to remember the password will still have the last word.

So rather than laboriously typing in my email address and password again and again, I put an AppleScript together and saved it as a click-on application. I stuck it under the apple in my OS X Classic Menu application.

The log-in page chiefly affecting me has only two fields to fill in, and the cursor goes to the first automatically as soon as the page appears. The script can be edited for any number of blank fields, however. Each field switch requires another line saying, tell application "System Events" to keystroke tab

The length of the time delay depends on the speed of the computer, and balances whether the page must be created rather than quickly hauled up from the cache.

The script, of couse, reveals the password.

I dunno whether it would work in anything older than Tiger. System 9's Script Editor is a write-off.

tell application "Firefox" to Get URL "http//mileslongblahblahblahblahblahblah"
   delay 4
   tell application "Firefox"
      activate
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "d76@acme.ca"
tell application "System Events" to keystroke tab
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "mypassword"
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return
   end tell
end tell
