Should a new iMac(intel) have Boot Camp on it?

Got my husband a new MacTell and Boot camp is not on it, and iWork will have to be paid for if he uses it.  
Is this correct?

That's the case with my Imac Intel. iWork is there only as a demo; Boot Camp is not present.

No. iWork is a whole other thing than iLife.

Thomas is absolutely correct, Jane.

Mine (and my son's) had a "free" copy of Parallels, which he has begun using and I have not . . . yet!

The "Trial" disc for iWork '06 will give you a taste for both Pages and Keynote. If you decide to get a full version it can be found for a fair price ($70 @ Amazon), here and there. Its '07 manifestation, as well as iLife '07, it's "estimated" may be out after Leopard is released . . . err something.

Their absence from January's MacWorld elicited some comment, but no public information I could discover.

Gee, I thought iWork would be part of it, and also Boot Camp.
No Parallels either, perhaps I should have bought it from SmallDog. I shall call them tomorrow, as maybe our next purchase will be from them.
Yet I do want to support our local Mac store,,,,,,,?,,,,

I actually asked them about iWork?
Heavens, I also bought DreamWeaver from them at retail price.  As we do want to support them, they are the only Mac store for miles and miles.

To be truthful, I dont think I am about to use iWork nor Boot Camp right away, and my husband certainly isnt, but I thought they would be there on the new Mac.

Back in the early days of home computing, all kinds of software was included in the purchase of the machine. I suppose there could be several reasons for that... like, few households had computers, so they needed the software.

These days, many more households have computers, and software. So, now there's an opportunity... develop computers that the old software will not run on so you can sell new software. I wonder if this was part of a grand plan, or just taking advantage of the situation.

Yes, I got all that, just was told that iWork was part of it, the word Demo was not used.
But we most likely wouldn't use it anyway, so I should just not be dissappointed.
He just loves the machine, so there is no real reason I should be p+m.  
I downloaded Google Earth for him and that is something that he will use and really like. Especially when we are planning hikes, kayaking, traveling,,,,,,on and on.

Boot Camp is free, but you have to choose to download it. However, one thing you should be aware of is that Boot Camp lets you install Windows, but it is not Windows. If you download the free Boot Camp, you will still need to buy a copy of Microsoft Windows to install on it. (The reason it is not included on the computer is that most Mac users do not have a copy of Windows they want to install on their Macs.)

Something like Boot Camp does come with OS X 10.5 ("Leopard"), which is not out yet. It still requires you to buy a copy of Microsoft Windows, though.

OK, that answers it for me, I sure am not about to buy any version of Windows.
So those two Photoshop plugins that I want(and perhaps a couple of other Fractal making programs) will just have to wait till someone writes something similar for Mac.
If I really think that I need(whoops there I go again, the proper word is Want), those programs, I can run them on one of our kids PCs.
The only kind of Windows I do, are the glass ones, and I had better start cleaning our sunroom, as they are dusty from the winter.

AFAIK, iWorks has never been pre-installed ( other than as a demo ) or free. Only iLife. And even upgrades to iLife are not free. You can easily check Apple's site to find out exactly what is installed on any/every machine they sell. Third-party re-sellers may install extra software/hardware, but they usually advertise that quite well. Most, like SmallDog, include things like laptop carriers, dotMac, memory upgrades, etc. as well as free shipping, but the price is usually very similar to the full retail value Apple suggests, they are extremely protective of the SRP.
