OT: Anyone here use a CPAP?
« on: February 28, 2007, 05:24:33 PM »
Is there a battery UPS that has the life to run a CPAP for at least 8 hours?
Is there a safe, reliable rechargable battery with 110vt that would operate a CPAP for about 8 hours?
This is needed for power outage backup for sleep APNEA patients.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Weldiger...

I do use a CPAP on a nightly basis.... but up until this point, had not considered the need for a UPS.  I've used the machine for 4+ years and in that time have not encounted a need for one.   Not that it couldn't arise... but if the machine were to 'go down' due to a power outage... I would just remove the mask and continue on.

That doesn't answer your question.... I'm sure APC would have something in their range of equipment that would meet your needs.

Best of luck in your search.

Thanks for reply Bob.  I hadn't thought much about it either, till news anchor on local TV station asked me to see what I could find out about them..  He just discovered that he has APNEA, and did a week long segment on it.  There are several now that come with battery for back up, but he has several folk that wanted to know about something to use with what they already have.
Best of luck with your breathing -
Thanks

APC UPSs.

Pro:

You can run the wattage/amperage of your CPAP machine by them and they will tell you which of their UPSs will last how long:

http://www.apc.com/

Cons:

(1) They will probably also tell you that their consumer UPSs are not  appropriate for critical life-or-death usage.

(2) At least some (I have several) APC UPSs beep piercingly every 30 seconds or so while they are running on battery.

This "feature" is obviously to encourage you to shut the attached computer (or whatever) down as quickly as possible before the UPS runs out of charge.

I think a whole night of that piercing beeping might just drive a person insane.

You might want to test out the idea of using a UPS overnight before you go recommending it to other people.

The devil is in the details . . .

Best regards,

My wife uses a CPAP  but we have never tried to run it off a battery. The issue is the current draw. Once you know that then you can estimate how many hours any battery system will give you. My wife is asleep or I would check her machine for current draw.

Assume that the current draw is 0.5 ampere and a battery will furnish 5 ampere-hours of "power". Then, the the a device running at 0.5 ampere will run for  10 hours before the battery is depleted and then must be recharged

Weldiger, check the CPAP's specs such as operating voltage, current draw etc. E-mail me and I will calculate the required battery capacity. One thing to note a battery furnishes DC and the CPAP will need AC so you need a DC-to-AC converter plus the battery.

I guess you want to have the CPAP available in case of a power shortage or perhaps you want to go camping or to be in a place without power. If the latter, I believe you might be able to run the CPAP of the car battery. You can buy a DC-to-AC converter for a car and all you have to do is plug the device into the car's cigarette lighter.

Good luck and call on me for any help you need as I know how nasty sleep apnea can be.

I use a CPAP but haven't tried the battery yet.  My old friend Ernie had a box with two motorcycle batteries and a circuit board that ran his for about 8-1/2 hours on a campout.  I haven't talked to him for awhile but I'll try to get ahold of him about what it is and where he got it.  I'd kind of like to have something for home myself for when the power goes out during storms.

Since they now make models that include a battery, they must either use a DC motor or have the inverter built-in when not using AC. In either case, I would be surprised if if a UPS ( of appropriate capacity ) would not run one for the whole night. At least for the remainder of one night. You're on your own if the power doesn't come back on in time to recharge the UPS batteries! eek2.gif

I use a CPAP have carried it to Ireland and used it there with just a plug adaptor. Never thought about taking it camping or what might happen if the power goes out for a whole night. Apnea is not something that will kill you just because it has been diagnosed. In other words, it is life threatening, but, depending on its severity, you may only suffer from lack of sleep ( which can affect the rest of your life ), not lack of life. Especially, if one has a light sleeper partner! smile.gif However, if the fear of power loss is also causing anxiety, the UPS might help.

Thanks for the info

Bob K. rnkiii   I already have 3 APC UPS units which I have on 3 of my computer stations.  I have checked APC for more information, but can find very little on long term back Up.

Epaminondas  as I have 3 APC units, I am well aware of the beep! J
Have been cogitating on using my own equipment for test, but kind of like the hen and the hog talking about giving someone else breakfast, I am not quite ready for the type of commitment required by the hog.

MamaMoose  if the backup in the APC runs the computer set up, it must be using 110, and something of the same type would need to be included for the CPAP.  I can’t find any useful information on my CPAP, and I have been using it long enough, that I have no idea where the original paper work is.  However on your kind offer to send you the information, and you would you do the calculations:  -- I wish I had known that before using Turbo Tax this year!!  [would you consider perhaps next year?]
Aleyken Sholem

Gunug  If your friend has something not too big or too complex, that might be the answer those folk need.  I have no intention of going camping, or any other activity that would keep me away from my own bed at night – but a reliable source for power loss, would be kind of comforting.

Xairbusdriver I had always hoped that the power wouldn’t go off while I was using the CPAP, but the guy who had the report on his own experience of sleep test, and the need for CPAP on the nightly news, has lots of email requesting information from others.  My CPAP is set on 20, so I kind of need to have it keep running while I am asleep.  We have been without power for as long as 5 days, but that was before I got the CPAP.  Now, I think I would take it and walk to the nearest place with power before going to sleep.

Thanks all – May your power always stay on, and may the wind always be at your back.

I guess I look at the machine as more of a luxury than a necessity. There are probably millions of people in the world who could benefit from the machine but they may live long lives and die of several other diseases than the problems associated with APNEA. My wife actually diagnosed my condition many years before I saw a doctor. ;-) for employment reasons, I refused to see a doc until after I retired. I take Plavix every day, but I've been arguing with the doctor that it is not needed for what he thinks it is but he says he wished he could have every body over 50 on it! smile.gif Since both the CPAP machine and the pills are covered by my insurance, I figure it's the only safe way to get any of my money back! tongue.gif

But I would not hesitate to sleep during a power outage ( or even a camping trip ) should the need arise. The main problem with APNEA is the detrimental effects of lack of sleep, not dieing. That lack of sleep also affects those within earshot, as well. I know of several people who have been diagnosed and have a machine but refuse to use it because of the uncomfortable mask. Some will never find a comfortable mask and some don't want to, there are amazingly comfortable ones available for those who seek them.

I think what Harv is suggesting is that almost any decent UPS should be capable of powering a CPAP machine through the night, it just doesn't use much power, certainly not as much as any computer. If that helps one sleep better, fine. Personally, I'm not in the market for either a machine with a built-in battery back up or having mine connected to a UPS ( FedEx, maybe, but not UPS! ).

I suspect that most deaths attributable to APNEA are never reported because it would be extremely difficult to tell that's what caused it. Unless one happened to be connected to a recording system at the time, it would probably be diagnosed as a heart attack or stroke. BTW, my machine has a recording function using a removable card. It must not hold much info as it's been almost two years since it was last read/reformatted and it shows only slightly more than 50% full. dntknw.gif Perhaps that kind of recording would show what happened just before a death, I don't know.

You, probably better than most here, know our 'departure time' is unknowable. wink.gif We do what we can to stay healthy ( if it's not too much trouble! rolleyes.gif ) and take the medicine(s) and advice of the doctors we trust. Be careful of technologies that try to get you to think they will do something that may not really be necessary. Buyer beware? And that certainly applies to UPSs. smile.gif

weldiger,

My going rate for income taxes is $200/hour. However for neurosurgery, I only charge $150/hour AND for solution to GUT (Grand Unified Theory), I am the cheapest around at $50/hour.

However, I do not guarantee results.
