Airport Extreme card not recognized

In preparing for installation of a wireless Airport Extreme 11 b/g/n base sation, i added an Airport Extreme card to my dual 2 GFHz PPC G5. This was the first install of an Airport card in the G5. After making sure the card was fully seated, I tried to identithe card. About This Mac reported it had "no information". I then reseated the card  and the antenna plug and then tried to "see" the card. Still "no joy". I also tied to access the card via Airport utilities in Utilities. Again no show!

I do have a an older (flying suacer) wired Airport base station installed and the G5 is attached to a router via Ethernet 10 base T. I accessed the Airport setup Assistant but got the following "No Airport Card Found - If you continue you will only be able to connect via a base sation connected via ethernet".

Bottom line, card not found. My questions are:

1) Will the card be seen only with a new Extreme Base Station and there really is no problem. Perhaps the old base station just could not locate the new card?

2) Does failure to "see" the card indicate there is a problem with the G5 or the card?

MM, exactly which "dual G5" do you have - dual processor or dual core? There is a key difference:

If it's not the dual core it should work - in which case I have no idea what the problem is. Could be a dead card...

You should be able to see the card in the System Profiler even if you have no base station at all. The fact that you can't strongly suggests the card is defective.

Or the card is fine and it's installed in a late-2005 PowerMac G5, which is incapable of recognizing it:

Thanks for the info. I have a dula processor G5 and from what info you gave, the extreme will not work in that system. The Portland Mac Store let me down on this one so I will see them about a solution.

Good luck. I'm starting to hear more and more stories about Store employees who don't know what they are talking about. Too few experts available to cover all the stores, or poor training???

Gregg,

I have been dealing with the Portland Mac store for 4 years and they have never let me down. I especially deal with Duane who is a real Apple Pro. My understanding is that they have to install some sort of a widget to get the card to work. Who knows it may be a bad card (does happen) but they stand by their products and will refund my money if necessary.
