This ought to be required reading for everyone who drops by here inquiring about setting up a home network (absent either an Apple Extreme or Apple Express)

He's just afraid of embarrassing the companies he's showing

That video is hilarious! rofl.gif

Airport Extreme, newer-old style, 811.g, workin' just fine here... faster than 811.b for sure, not sure what the through-put is... is there an Apple-based program to test that?

I have a possible cause for his problems: the drivers for PCMCIA slots were probably generic one's and not those supplied by the company that made the chipset. . .the two new LENOVO's were possibly slower due to the general &$&#*$&# of VISTA drivers and VISTA.  Anyway; somehow the laptops themselves were the problem because the degree of the problem changed when you changed the laptops.

I don't get it. What did he expect? Hasn't he done PC/Windows installations before?     dntknw.gif And, is Netgear any easier on a Mac?

But I'm excitedly awaiting his review of mouse pads next week! WOOHOO! How did he know I'm in the market?? eek2.gif

Hey Chris, I too can create the conditions to increase the problems with Netgear or Apple routers, all that says is that I'm able, not that the router isn't capable.

I run Netgear routers and they work right out of the box, yes there are screens like Logo Compatible checks and what have you, but that's not exclusive to Netgear.

Apple makes proprietary hardware and software and I suspect his use of the Apple router was in conjunction with an apple notebook.

Keep in mind as you watch Pogue’s flicks that he’s dropping names like dandruff. He’s paid to promote product lines and demonstrate how he can promote others. Not unlike any other salesman, it’s just his calling is Apple.

To find out your Network stats use your Network Utility

I run a G router and move just as many packets as friends who visit with their powerbooks, macbooks, thinkpads, toshiba’s, here at my crib or at theirs. On an N router theirs, if using an N card, will move faster because of multi-directional technology.

He never said it couldn't be done, he just didn't have the time to figure it out, even with top-level, "expert" help from the companies involved! I suppose a generic, non-power-user would have no trouble? Or, more than likely, that user would simply not know how slow the connections were. And, certainly, he would be 'used' to the redundant, confusing, stupid screens from NETgear and MS. doh.gif I can only assume that most PC users simply don't know there could possibly be a different, much less better way. dntknw.gif wallbash.gif

I know Jim, I didn’t have time to go to the moon, just couldn’t figure out how to launch my Jacuzzi. biggrin.gif I would call my sales representative and ask him why my Jets don’t perform like the Jets on a Lunar Rocket or maybe I’ll just write a piece about my failure and drop a few names like G.E. and Raytheon.

Let’s see, I set up a Netgear router at my neighbors house next door. They have a HP Pavilion. I didn’t choose Netgear but rather MS software configuration and the task was simply automated. Another friend who has Sony equipment and knows absolutely nothing about this or most computer technologies went through the process on their own with ease and success on a Netgear router that I purchased for them from Amazon. Their N netgear router runs 2-3  as fast as mine, 150,000+ in peak hours.

We use netgear routers and antennas from the boats to Netgear routers on shore. The Coast Guard station on the beach uses Netgear routers that seems to work in excess of a mile. All these were set up by non professionals and seem to perform within the variables that are defined in the instruction manual.

If Apple makes a good router fine, but it’s not better just because Pogue can’t get his Netgear to work. He also mentioned Linksys and it’s failure to perform to his standards, but I suspect Cisco (Linksys base company), the Mother or all Networking knows how to build a router to meet the standards they advertise.

The Flick and the subsequent article was Flawed in its comparative analysis from my perspective, though I do admit it was Entertaining! wink.gif

I'd be surprised if Cisco didn't build the Airport's. I don't think Apple actually manfactures much of their hardware, anymore. But their integration of it with the software seems an example for the industry, IMHO. Whether it's worth the extra cost is another question ( excuse me, I have to go drink some more 'kool aid' ).

I'm happy and glad that many people can install these things with no difficulties. Perhaps letting MS do the work is the answer, just glad I don't have to follow their 'leadership'. I'm still battling the differences between Word and Publisher with their duplicate interface but different actions! wallbash.gif That, and the fact that our 'secretaries' don't seem to know what tabs are nor how to use them. I don't know which is worse, the apps or the lack of concern for sloppy output. dntknw.gif

"Entertainment" is about all I expect from most 'news' papers, real or virtual. I'm usually not disappointed. doh.gif

The chipset in an apple  is http://www.broadcom.com/ I think. They also build chipsets for Griffin tech in Tenn. http://www.griffintechnology.com/

What some people object to with netgear setups is that they force you to put a security password in place right from the start. No other router requires this, and no other router builds as much security in, as some will claim. The security features in Netgear slow the router and setup down, but the engineers insist that security is a priority and will not concede to their critics.

In todays world this router is considered the fastest and best bang for the buck.

But it lacks gigabite ethernet, if that matters?
