I’m reinstalling OS 9.0.4 on my old 4400. Everything seems to be working fine.
Except when I insert a CD to install something, a window appears that says the desktop is being rebuilt. There must be a setting somewhere to prevent this from happening.

recommend you update that to 9.1

OS 9.1  Update

See if that helps.

If updating to 9.1 doesn't help try making sure the File Exchange Extension is activated in the Extensions manager. I vaguely remember something about that having an effect on desktop rebuilding but it may only apply to just keeping it from doing a double rebuild....can't quite remember... Thinking.gif

Incidentally that seemed to be a problem with 9.04:

I seem to remember that there were a few little glitches about that and other strange behavior in 9.0.4, and I recall that updating to 9.1 made things a lot more stable.

I don't think 9.2 will work on the older Macs - pre-Gx models. Only 9.1

That's absolutely correct... 9.1 is as far as you can go until the Beige G3??? I think??? huh.gif

But 9.1 is a great system, it just needs regular care with a good disk utility and it will work fine.

Norton Systemworks was great with 9.1, but don't use it for anything higher!!!

Most of the upgrades in 9.2x were related to adding extensions for video or tuning up 9 to run better as Classic for X.

Sorry for the delay in acknowledging your responses.

Maximum update on the 4400 was 9.1.

As krissel suggested, activating the File Exchange Extension solved the problem.
