Looking for an Avery template
« on: April 19, 2007, 01:33:56 PM »
I solved this! See post #4 for how and for info on making your own templates. smile.gif

Avery supposedly has free templates on their web site, but when we try to download the one we need (and several others), we get an error message that the page/document no longer exists.  huh.gif

I know I had these templates as very old MSWord 5.1a docs, but those are stored (maybe) on one of our old cd's and I haven't yet gone through those (several 100! yes, I'm a packrat.)  tongue.gif

I didn't find a workable template in Apple Works, nor in Mariner Software.

We are in need of several, but would appreciate the ones for business cards for ink jet printers (8871 or 8371). I'm guessing that since they were free, it would be okay to ask this ... does anyone still have one of these templates? If so, I'd appreciate your emailing me a copy.

Thanks.
Kimmer

Kim:

I use Word 2004 and Filemaker 7.  There are Avery templates on both of these.

Looks like Avery downloads only for MS Word.  Here are the Templates

Thanks, Daryl, but I have neither of those programs. Also, the link you shared is the one I tried yesterday and provides this result:

The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it. Please inform the site administrator of the referring page.1

Thanks for trying though. smile.gif

I did finally solve the problem, and in order to keep XABD happy  tongue.gif  I'll share the solution.

In poking around at Avery's web site, I found info on "Software Alliances" and discovered that I can print labels via Apple's Address Book (not that that helped me here, but might be useful to someone else). Also, you can find Avery templates in "Click 'N Design", Word, Print Explosion Deluxe, Print Shop for Mac, SOHO. Helpful links for those that might need them are here.

Searching the web, I found a link that said "make your own template" with Office 95 or higher. Setting aside my sarcastic side that thought, "Mariner Write IS higher",  rolleyes.gif ... I printed out the info, restarted my computer, moving to my old drive that runs Panther, searched and found I still had Word X installed (good thing, haven't yet found the install CD since our move) and opened it and followed the instructions (which I'll paste below because I can't find the link right now).

Voilà!

Ready made templates all formatted nice and pretty. I was jazzed. Sneakers response when he got home was, "Oh that's nice."  angry.gif  He is in major doo-doo and owes me double big time now.  clap.gif

Anyhow ... here's how you make your own if you own MSlush. wink.gif

CODE
   *  Microsoft Office 95 or higher
   * Avery® Ink Jet or Laser Business Cards

   1. Open a new document in Word.
   2. Click the Insert pull-down menu. Select Picture, then click From File. Find your logo file and double-click on it.
   3. Size your logo to approximately one-half inch by dragging the corner handles in or out. (Use the Word ruler as a guide.)
   4. Type your name and contact information below the logo.
   5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
   6. On the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels and click the Labels tab.
   7. Right-click the logo and text in the Address window and click Paragraph. Select Centered from the Alignment pull-down menu and click OK.
   8. Click Options. In the Label Products list choose Avery standard. In the Product number list, click 8371-Business Card. Click OK.
   9. Click New Document. When you are satisfied with your design, save it.
  10. Insert a sheet of card stock into the printer and click Print.

Tip: Print your design onto a blank piece of regular paper first to see how your card will look and ensure that it is positioned and formatted correctly.

I am compelled (by at least 15+ years of RAGE) to add this note that Avery has NEVER been the company for Mac-sters it was before Dennison purchased it . . . whenever

In the early days (early 90s, late 80s) it was absolutely Mac friendly/enthusiastic.
  1. templates
  2. telephone support
  3. eagerness to please
then Dennison came upon the scene and everything went into the toilet, as far as I could tell.

The early SW was I think MacLabel Plus, or something. Then it (and we) were abandoned.  Nothing has since come close, IMNSHO. I wish someone could really prove me wrong. All I want is something that doesn't require an advanced degree to fire-up.

I'm glad you got your problem-solved, Kimmer. I just wish Dennison/Avery had the will/abilities to write Mac software again.

Sincerely yours,

clap.gif  That's what I thought when I had to restart on this drive, then that drive, then this one (mainly because my older drive won't connect to the internet any longer and I don't know why and didn't want to spend time trying to figure it out). Besides, why should I be forced to go backwards OS wise, to launch an old word program just to get a template to print cards?!?!?!?!?!?! It's nuts and it's unfair since win users don't have to jump through hoops.

I generally use "fair" or its converse to refer to deals. Not "business". Business is either smart or stupid and Dennison is Surpassingly Stupid, as I veiw it.

Does that work in Mariner Write?

You can create a template in MW by using its "Table" function. It's a little tedious and may take some experimenting/printing to get exactly right. But you won't have to use Word! laugh.gif clap.gif

The critical part is measuring the label sheets as accurately as possible. I have a generic, OfficeMax 1" x 2 5/8" mailing labels with 30 per sheet. The 'trick' is to make the table 10 rows deep and five columns wide. The two extra columns are for the 1/8", unprintable space between the three columns of real labels. These labels actually have four different 'margins'! One ( top?) is exactly 1/2", one ( right? ) is exactly 3/16", so it's important to have a printer that can print at least that close to the top and the right side.

You can, of course, set the margins for each column. And you can easily "grab" the left/right column 'line' and move it with the mouse. I couldn't find any way of setting the height of the rows except using the "Table->Format Cell..." menu. There, you can set the height to exactly whatever you need, as well as the width. But the height setting needs to be done 10 times, once for each row. The width can be done by selecting the entire column, thus only five times. But it works! Not as easily as with FileMaker, of course. Maybe you should send Mariner a request!

These things are mostly used with a database ( hundreds of different addresses or just 30 duplicate records for business cards, etc. ), so I've never tried it in MW.

Quite some time ago I purchased a software called Label Printer Pro. Not a large chunk of money and has served me well for myriad Avery labels as well as several different CD and jewel case label.

Not as easy as I did it in slushword either. LOL! Even with the restarts back and forth. Now that it's set it's easy.

The templates/doc didn't open nicely in MW either. All the text was skewed.  huh.gif

They've had requests. They have a template. But it isn't the same as the Avery paper, so it's useless right now. But they are working on templates.

Yeah, Sneaker has a database he made, but that's in OpenOffice and it won't make these cards either ... and blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda.

This is really a "wife is frustrated and tired of hearing the moaning the groaning and willing to get it to work and get it done so we can move on to other things (like getting rid of the weeds and planting the stepables before they kick us out of the neighborhood!)" type of project.

I'm still irked that Avery is such a Surpassingly Stupid company, as RHP put it. Between Sneakers and I, we've spent 3 days messing with this, but at least it's done.
