Reformat a hard drive

I have a FireWire hard drive that is giving me a lot of grief. I would like to completely reformat it. What is the best way to do this? I've tried erasing it using Disk Utility, but that did not get me anywhere.

PS tacit, I still can't get Toast 7 to run. See 'program won't open'.

Steve when you open Disk Utility click on the top drive not the named drive icon, your options will be available there.

By selecting the top drive as suggested by sandbox and going to 'erase' mode, I was able to completely erase the entire drive. I had it write zeroes in all locations. This seems to have cleared up the problem. Time will tell. Thanks guys.
