Just wondering....

Does the number of topics and replies reflect a real comparison of activity on our two forum cousins?

Ok, when the split occured, like, how was it done? All the topics dating back x number of days were divided up into the "correct" category?

I guess I'm a little suprised at the disparity. I thought it would be closer.

Gregg, I basically just moved "community" topics from the first page of the new Tech forum when we split the forums - it was nothing more scientific than that. Seemed somewhat pointless to move topics that were no longer seeing much if any activity.

It seems like topics are up much longer since the split; is there more per page now?  I'm usually more interested in the community topics although sometimes I feel drawn to help someone in Tech or even have a problem of my own.

When the split of the forums was implemented, one of the adminstrators volunteered to move "recent" posts from the tech side to the community side to get things started. (To "populate it" as we called it. It was kind of like when you stock a pond to get it started.)

There wasn't a "carved in stone" date of what "recent" meant--we left it up to that person's usual sense of good judgement--as we did with which original posts were moved. After that, a few of the posts were moved back to the tech side, and a couple more tech posts may have been moved to the community side, IIRC.

We really weren't worried at that time on making sure it was "accurate"--we just wanted to get it started. As a result, trying to compare the two going by the total numbers is somewhat of a waste of time.  However, if you really need to do so, and why that is might be a mystery to many of us biggrin.gif, you should probably pick a random date after the forums split, and count from there. And still, you'd have to decide whether or not to include older threads with newer posts, etc. And even then, I don't know if it reflects much of anything--but if it makes you happy, goferit. biggrin.gif

EDIT:  Well, I guess in the time it took me to type, Paddy got it answered. (And I even tried to protect her identity in this post.)

Ok, so Technical topics and "OT" threads on page two were left behind in the Technical forum. That would account for some of the "skew" in favor of the Technical forum. Did the switch also "leave behind" the number of replies from OT threads that were moved to the Community forum?

I'd say that's because it takes longer to bump.gif topics to the second page since new ones are now being added in two places instead of all in one. Right? Thinking.gif

Don't know if we changed the default of how many threads/posts per page with the new software.

In any case you can choose your own number of how many to show on the page in My Controls. Under Options on the left click on Board Settings and you'll see the two drop downs where you can pick a number you like.

Note that some subjects will remain on the front page because they are active and still receiving replies. That can account for the appearance of them being "up much longer".  smile.gif

No complaint about how long things are on the front page except when I have posted something stupid and no one responds!   wallbash.gif I just have to try even harder not to post that kind of stuff; maybe I can get to the root cause of my "foot in mouth" disease!  When my youngest sister was 3-4 she came up to a group of my friends and I and asked me: "Can you analyze yourself better than others?"  I don't know where a little girl that age came up with that but I always thought that I could do better than others; I just have to reflect a little more on my choices!   Thinking.gif At least no more topics with "Zombie" in the title!  biggrin.gif
