Backing up just the basic system
« on: June 24, 2007, 07:00:31 AM »
I have a very full boot drive with all sorts of stuff that does not impact system operation. What I want to do is back up just the basic system items including all components that are critical to the system. And I want the system to be bootable.

Is this asking too much? How do I go about doing this? I used to have Retrospect but abandoned it in favor of SuperDuper! for all my complete backups.

What I am trying to so is build a bootable stripped down basic system for a high capacity flash drive and to use it as my portable maintenance and repair device. I plan to have DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro and iPartition also on the drive. I estimate adrive with a capacity of 20 - 30 GB will suffice.

Thanks for any ideas,

MamaMoose

Tom, if you search the 2007 Forum Archives ( I used "flash drive" as the search subject) this post from Harv comes up:

QUOTE
In case you missed it (or care)...

Mac troubleshooter Ted Landau posted a Web page on his blog that describes how to make a boot drive from a 1GB (minimum) flash (or thumb) drive.

Repair/recovery applications can be added to make the flash drive an indispensable all-around troubleshooting/fixing tool.

The fairly simple steps are located Here.

And he includes links, which wouldn't translate with the copy and paste of his thread.

Be aware that you probably won't be able to boot from the flash drive on your G5 system. I think only intel models can do that. And that is a pretty high capacity flash drive! eek2.gif
