When it rains...

Problem #1

While I was online late last night I started having trouble getting to some sites and finally could only get to TS and Google, then nothing. Have cable with Optonline.

Went online with my dialup connection and had no trouble so it wasn't the net itself, though I did check with internetconnection.com and there were several main servers down.

Called up Optonline and went through the whole reboot process a couple times for the modem and router. The guy, while from India actually spoke English well enough for me to understand and he knew Macs, had me bypass the router and connect directly to the modem. I was able to connect barely to some sites but loading was excruciatingly slow. Pinging at first did not work so he figured there was something wrong with my computer or some sort of program was keeping me from contacting the modem since he said he could see a clear connection from my modem to  the net at full speed.

After I hung up I checked the Info tab in the Network Utility and it was reading a different ethernet from the main computer. After changing selections the ping went through so it was getting online. However the sites I tried to access either didn't show up or loaded worse than dialup in speed.

So I shutdown, rebooted everything again and reconnected the router and all cables.

Problem #2

My intent was to fire up the 9600 to see if it could go online OK. Well to my shock it just made a 'switching' noise and wouldn't start up. No chime, just a sound like it tried to start but immediately switched off. It has never done that before.

Problem #3

OK, so I have another 9600 which will only run OS 9 and I just use it for scanned as it is the original 9600 and is not compatible with my other 9600 internally (different motherboard, power supply, etc.). So I went to start up that computer....unbelievably it also won't start. Similar response to the other.
I think they've been conspiring against me... sad.gif


Thank goodness for my Wallstreet.
I'm on it now and able to access the net to get here but am having the same trouble with most other sites not loading. I'm not sure this will post.

So, anyone have an idea as to what is going on? He claims the modem is OK but I have my doubts if the Wallstreet is having trouble.
And do I have two power supplies that decided to fail at the same time?

Added: I have no trouble zipping around TS at full speed but I have only been able to load the Apple site (very slowly) and Google. Almost everything else comes up with a failed page load.
Why???????

Update: I think there was something screwy going on at the cable company. At the moment everything is loading OK.

Will check back later to see if anyone has suggestions.

I called Comcast last night about a TV problem. The 'voice' said they were "excessively backed up" and I should press "2" to have them send a 're-authorization' to the black box. That enabled the 70 'music' channels ( only two of which I ever listen to ) but not CSPAN2 which is absolutely crucial to weekend viewing. Also followed the "unplug and wait a while" routine. Still no help with CSPAN ( which can be seen on the other TV's not connected to the black box/modem ).

Apparently this all occurred during your problems and seems to have corrected them! smile.gif Let me know when/if I need to perform these actions again. You're welcome! thumbup.gif

Kris, in all likelihood it was the network, rerouting and or whatever?

If you suspect that Optimum Online is having problems a good place check see if any one else in your area is expierencing the same is DSLReports.

I had trouble getting on at about 4 a.m. .  Tried reauthorizing my dsl modem...but had a glitch there. I was in Firefox...so I went and tried Netscape...same problem. Tried to open Mail...with NO success. I was about to call the phone company, but decided to try one more time in Safari and 'voila' I got right on with NO problem...surfed a couple of sites and no problems. So I went back to Firefox...and got on immediately with NO problem.  Mail worked too!  Guess it was GREMLINS!!!

Bil, I did check out the dslreports page via dialup but found no one else having trouble, but then how many of them could get online if they didn't have a backup service anyway?  The page which gives the present status was not available which should have given me a clue. rolleyes.gif

SB, when I first checked internet reports it showed several servers across the country at 0 but none in my area. Later when I went back I saw the NJ one at 50% which may have been the problem.

What was really strange is that I could get to TS almost without fail and as fast as usual but 95% of the rest of the net was off limits. Thinking.gif

Roy's problems corresponded to the same time period so I'm betting it was a widespread upchuck on the net. getsick.gif

Then again, maybe ABD fixed things....  smile.gif


As to my two dead 9600s, they both had new batteries in the last year so that isn't it. Nothing like going from 4 working Macs to 2 in one day.

Likely not related, but we haven't been able to successfully access the web or email on a regular basis for almost a week now. We know that a fiber optic cable was cut in the area, but it supposedly only affected comcast customers. Our isp says they have no probs. They want us to trouble shoot by hooking up the modem to one computer. Prob there due to the screw up by the electrician when the house was built. Not sure how we are going to resolve this, short of paying to have the computer guy come check things out. sad.gif

I've spent my time reading books, cleaning out boxes and such. I'm thinking maybe I'll just let the net go. wink.gif

Kris, if you can remember the sites you were looking for then trace route them. You'll see where they go and the servers they hit. TS is in Atlanta. At some point the route to the other sites would have taken a different route, could have been in California, not in NJ. Since you could get to TS for a while it was most likely a server or trunkline outside your region.

You wouldn't believe how many URLs I tried, ones that were located in Europe and who knows where else. I must have attempted 20-30 different and varied sites but only TS and Google were reachable for a couple hours.

I'm beginning to think that perhaps they had a server go out and when it came back on it took a few hours to repopulate the DNS addresses. Or something like that.

What network do you ride on, for example I'm on a Time & Warner Cable http://www.atdn.net/
As soon as my data leave my router it's on Roadrunner and then ATDN until it reaches the next network http://www.teliasonera.com/ then to TS servers on http://www.gnax.net/

If I go to steves-digicam it rides on ATDN until it gets to http://www.twtelecom.net/ another time warner network.

If you were able to access Google parts of it are in Atlanta as well!! wink.gif

You can have my 9600 for a very small price.  yes.gif  It's just taking up space around here, I've pulled the ATA card to use in my DA, I'll pull the G4 Sonnet 800 unless you want it (but I think you already have one anyway). It's already got 768 MB of matched memory, and a few other extras that aren't worth beans except to someone who can use this machine.

It's happening again!

I lost connection for about an hour early today and went off to do other things. Came back this eve and all worked...for a while.

I'm back to only being able to get here and to dslreports (slowly) and sometimes Google but little else.

You are really generous to make that offer but I spent some time this weekend reading and checking out eBay. I had pretty much decided that I would just not let it get to me for now but be ready to buy new when and if the DA dies on me.
Then this evening I was looking at one of the 9600s and just for the heck of it poked the power button on the keyboard.

"Boing!" The darn thing started up. rolleyes.gif

Whether it will continue to do so, who knows. But at least it forced me to think through my present setup and mentally be ready to move on.

So thank you again for your offer. I still owe you a .
