FAX software for Intel Macs
« on: July 30, 2007, 02:17:43 PM »
My sister needs some reliable FAX software for her 3 month-old MacBook. I know she's running at least OS 10.4.7 or later. I'm pretty sure it's a Core 2 Duo.

I had her download a trial version of Pagesender.

Any suggestions for what works well for any of you?

TIA,

I don't know about the Intels, but the fax software that comes with OS X.4 works fine for me on my G4 QS 2002.

She will need the external modem to send/receive faxen with the Intel Macs.

To send a fax (contents of the document you're working on, or anything you have open, do a command-P. Then click on the PDF button on the lower left corner of the resulting print window and select "Fax PDF".

To setup for receiving faxen, go to the Syatem Preferences and click on the Print & Fax icon and proceed from there.

You can define a folder where incoming faxen will reside.

The only thing I don't like about the built-in capability is the inability of the incoming fax to be recognized as a fax vs. a call. The resulting shriek in the callers ear is not desirable. So I set my computer to be in idle mode, then manually activate when I expect a fax.

Hope this works with the Intels.

Anybody out there that uses the Intel Mac have any first hand user experiences? Put in your 2¢ worth, or correct me if I'm totally off-base. It won't be the 1st time!

The included faxing ability in OS 10.4.x works just fine for me too, Chris. I have yet to need to receive a fax, but I've sent them without incident. In fact, the only machine I've been able to fax from in this house IS my Intel MacBook Pro - the builder of this house, for reasons known only to himself, didn't foresee any need to include a phone outlet in the living room, which I use as my office, since we also have a family room and a downstairs "rec room" and had no need for a formal living room in addition! Subsequently, I cannot fax from my G5, which has a broadband connection (which I also had to add, but that's easier, since the cable company does that as part of installation) and have to fax from my MacBook Pro which can be moved to a telephone outlet.

I bought the Apple external modem, which is about the size of a BIC lighter, and it works very well. smile.gif
