Uninstalling Acrobat
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:50:18 AM »
When setting up my current machine, I installed Acbrobat 5 (OS9 application) and the used a patch to make it OSX compatible. Of course, it was set as a default application to open pdf files.

I later installed version 7.

I now cannot find out:

i) how to delete version 5.05 (as it is) - the original install CD is in OS9 but the application is OSX.

ii) how to change from 5.05 to 7 as the default application for pdfs.

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks dwb

Welcome to Techurvivors smile.gif

I'm guessing from your posting time that you are probably in Europe - there are a few Europeans on here, but the the majority of members are in North America which is still fast asleep rolleyes.gif
While I can't help with your problem, by the middle of the afternoon there should be posters with far more expertise online and able to help. And you'll find them a very friendly and patient bunch. I know they're patient because I've tested it more than a few times smile.gif

Welcome to TS!

Find a pdf on your drive and do a Command I on the document, (click once, then apple key-letter I) .  Look for the triangle  to the left of "Open With".  Click on the triangle, and it'll show you the default application.  Now click on the drop down arrows and choose the application you want it to open with.  If the application you want is not in the list, choose "Other" and navigate to the application you want.  The "Change All" button underneath will become "active".  If you want to change all the pdfs to open with this choice, click it, and then close the Get Information window.

Thanks for the info on changing the default - great.

It would still be nice to unistall if anyone can help there, too.

Cheers

First, another Welcome to TS, dwb! Hope you enjoy visiting often! smile.gif

Uninstalling most programs is a simple "drag the item to the trash and select 'Empty Trash'". There will probably be some small auxillary files that may remain on your drive. But most will be very small and unless you are really short of space, don't worry about them. In this case, I'd look for the main Acrobat application file, probably in the OS9 area , select it ( as above ) and use command-delete ( the Apple key and the delete key ). That will send it to the Trash. The next time you "Empty the trash" it will be gone!

Adobe products are notorious for installing many little files everywhere (Adobe Font List comes to mind), but they're tiny and take up negligible space. I would think getting rid of the application itself would be enough for you. (I've got both 9 and OSX on my hard drive, and I've got Acrobat 4 and 5 in 9 Applications and Acrobat 7 in 10.3.9.)

Probably just throwing away 5 would then make the system use 7 as the default. At worst it would ask for an application to open a pdf when double clicked. The you could select Acrobat 7 and that would do it.

Then again, having two versions of an application may sometimes come in handy.

Welcome, dwb!

If you're really a fanatic about removing unused things, you can play around with all the little files dboh mentions. Just move things to the desktop one at a time and open Reader, or try to. If it doesn't work, put the file back and use "Label" to mark it so you know it is essential.

P.S. Jennie, How'd you do that highlighted "reason for edit" thing???

Gregg-I think you can do it, if you are editing your own post, in Full Edit.  I'm pretty sure Members can edit own posts, but it is available in both quick and full edit now that I think of it.....

Thanks for the "Thanks", dwb! Dno't wait for another question/problem to return. Visit daily, if not more often! And be sure to visit the "Community" side. We can talk about almost anything over there, even if it's not Mac related, although I have a hard time relating to anything else! blush-anim-cl.gif laugh.gif

Gregg-I think you can do it,

I think it must be an Admin only option.

Not to neglect the original topic: good to see that dwb got a problem resolved. smile.gif

And even Admins have no "Edited by:" option in "Fast Reply". But since you now know how to do this, we'll have to raise your dues! 200% for starters. Please send the check to me, I'll handle it from there! smile.gif

I mis understood--- The "edited by" is, you are right only available in Full Edit, the "reason for edit" is universal.  And Quick Edit" can become "Full Edit" by clicking on "Use Full Editor"

And it's a topsy turevey, get down and boogie world oout there, so be careful.
