Windows XP Home Edition successfully installed!
« on: August 22, 2007, 09:31:53 PM »
Well,

I've successfully installed Boot Camp and a copy of Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on my daughter's MacBook Pro. I don't have the Music notation software yet to interface with her Casio keyboard, but it will arrive for her soon.

Things seem to be working fine, I can switch easily between the two systems, etc.

One question comes to mind about the Windows partition about viruses, attacks, etc.

If she doesn't connect to the internet while in Windows through a browser, is she still vulnerable through the wireless connnection? I would think that she is only vulnerable if she were to run Outlook or Outlook Express for e-mail or run Explorer. But not being a Windows user, I don't know.

She only wants to use XP for the music software anyway.

TIA,

Not sure about that Chris, but since you never know when she might need some Windows update or driver or something that is Windows-only and requires a trip online, it's better to be safe than sorry. I run Avast, which is available in a free version and generally gets very good reviews.

Well, good point... Just registering it over the net made me nervous!

FYI, I set up Boot Camp so that the two partitions cannot share files, which is the more secure way of doing it. It's a bit less convenient  to do it that way, because if she downloads Windows software while she's booted into X, she'll have to burn it on a disc to install it in the Windows partition.

I downloaded that version of AVAST from your link, and a couple of other Windows apps, including a trial version of some MIDI music notation program called Midiillustrator for her to try.

I didn't have time tonight to install it, so if she really wants to use it, she'll have to figure it out... oh boy, I can't wait for that phone call! I put them all in a new folder for her so she can burn when ready.

I don't think I could ever get used to the sound of XP starting up coming out of a Mac jawdrop.gif
