Updated website, and more to come :)
« on: August 19, 2007, 03:57:22 AM »
Hi people smile.gif

Since a few people here have been pointing me out at some issues, and helping me with a problem I had in Safari I thought I should post new updates from my website here.
It's not really much of a topic but some might to see how it's all evolving.

So I will update this topic as I'll update the website, just to keep you guys busy tongue.gif
When you visit the website you can always check my "latest updates" to see what has been changed or added... or take out (even that happens) or maybe changed room... well anything can happen there.

 smile.gif

What has been updated since I took out the frames:
- Added (and noted) PayPal to my website
- Added "Lightbox 2" to show my pictures now (a-ma-zing)
- I have deleted my own script for the thumbnails.
- I have gone "Widescreen", adding more space to the textfield.
- Added a Favicon (which only seens to work if you put it online?)
- Added "My iTunes Widget" to my website

quibbling here....  "More information" needs to be more distinct.  I'm wondering where to go, and finally see the small type in the line.

What are you using Lightbox for?
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

You mean I should use something else then just saying "More Information"? OK... will think about something else. Or let me know wink.gif

To see Lightbox in action, press one of the thumbnails. They aren't in all pages but some have them. I also have to change the text on "websites" and "logo" pages cause that text doesn't belong there. Those pages are going to have an overview from websites and logos, and those will be the pages where Lightbox can go crazy wink.gif

Yep, it's wider, all right! Unfortunately, there is now no horizontal scrolling available to see the ends of your text lines. I've gotta go right now, but I'm willing to bet the problem is in the CSS, probably the "maincontentwide" definition. Maybe a "overflow: hidden;"? BTW, this is from an 800 pixel wide window. (See attached image below)

And I hope you'll get your name on the page, soon. I'm not sure Windows uses the 'title bar' for the page name like a Mac does. I think you just need to get that name, personal or company in front of your viewers ( potential customers )! smile.gif

Wish I'd had someone to bet with! There is an "overflow: hidden;" in the "maincontentwide" expression. Of course, that is also used in several other expressions, not sure why you're so fond of that! Although it does do a good job of suppressing scroll bars. smile.gif

More questions:
1. What is the difference between "Websites" and "Logos" under the "Portfolio" navigation tab and the "My Websites" and "My Logos" on the left side navigation links?
2. What if the difference between the upper "Projects" tab the "My Projects" left-hand link?
3. Why are "Karmen Wong" and "Emily" in both the "Projects" and "Members Only" tabs?

More quibbles: I'm not sure your favorite iTunes purchases have anything to do with a business wed site. I suppose some might think if you like the same music as they do, they might feel more "in tune" ( no pun intended! ) with your design philosophy. Personally, if I were hiring someone to design a web site/logo/corporate ID it would seem more important to see prior work and testimonials from customers than what you might be doing during the time you might be billing me. laugh.gif But that's just me! smile.gif Similarly, I'm not fond of "My" anything in a business site; "Our", maybe, even if it is a one-man shop, but not "My". dntknw.gif Just doesn't sound 'professional'. Things may be different in Europe. And, that's purely my opinion, anyway! blush-anim-cl.gif

Not sure I've ever seen a "Members Only" section in a business site. I have seen "Registered" or "Customers Only" or some such. Is that what you intended to have there?

I found 2 thumbnails on this page:

http://www.marceldaems.com/pages/portfolio/index.htm

and clicking on them didn't do anything.

I'm confused.

Damn.... so you were actually better of with my smaller version blush-anim-cl.gif hmmm
The overflow is hidden yes.
I was thinking, for people like you using the browser window on smaller then 1024 pixels, I can add something like:
body {overflow-y: auto; overflow-x: hidden} but the problem is that not all browsers understand that -y or -x extra.
But if I just add it to the body tag, you'll be able to scroll the entire website smile.gif
I don't mind adding that, but I don't like to see scrollbars in the main area itself.

Good point, but the "about" page is coming.

I am honestly thinking to take out the left side buttons linking to "My Websites", "My Logos" and "My Projects" cause people can just as well reach them using the drop-down menu, and that's why it's there for.
Still thinking about that, give me some time wink.gif

Nothing tongue.gif (see previous answer)

3. Why are "Karmen Wong" and "Emily" in both the "Projects" and "Members Only" tabs?

When I created the standard page and drop-down menu I needed to add fake links, that's why I just added those names to wherever I needed them, just to fill up the drop-down so I could see if it works.
They don't really have a reason being there, and at this point I should take them out yes.
The only thing that is probably going to happen is that we are going to create a site for Emily (mutual friend) and her jewelry, to give her a place on the net so she can starts promoting herself.
I will put her domain on my host package and we both will create the site.
So that's another reason why I added her name, cause at the end there will be something there.

What will be changed soon is the "Members Only" section, it will change into "Log In".

OK, that all makes sense. As I often say about anything I do, "It's a work in progress!" smile.gif

And I very much appreciate your allowing your friends to make comments about the details about your work. It takes a big man ( not to mention, confident ) to actually ask for ( hopefully, constructive ) criticism. salute.gif notworthy.gif

I'm not clear on what you are wanting to do with "overflow: hidden;". Frankly, I've never used it for anything. I suppose it could come in handy for keeping a particularly wide image from forcing a scroll bar. I guess I think of this function as more of a special use thing instead of a site-wide need. What does the site look like if you remove all uses of that?

But with just text, even styled text, I'd think you'd want all of it visible, even if the viewer increased the text size to the maximum. They may have needs that you aren't aware of and need text as big as possible. With the "hidden" value, they could end up seeing only a few letters instead of a few words. Either way, they are probably not going to try and figure out what kind of services you offer. In other words, they'll probably not become customers! eek2.gif

Try not to design a page with your favorite window size. Remember, your viewers tastes are usually a little different than your own. They want to decide how and at what size to view your site. Fortunately, CSS is a great tool for allowing that to happen and still not destroy your 'fluid' designs! smile.gif

Hey Airbusdriver smile.gif

I don't mind the critic or remarks, otherwise I wouldn't post it here.
But I might not do all people here sugest wink.gif
Also, thanks for your PM, I added that to my bookmarks, it might come in handy.

I'll test it out how my site looks when I have the maintext area scrollable (in hight).
The thing is, I personal don't like the looks of scrollbars inside a website sad.gif
I know you can make them fancy with a script or flash or whatever but then again, I don't like using to much scripts either and no flash on my website (as it tends to get boring once you saw it).
But in general, I'll look into putting scrollbars in smile.gif
I can still put them auto; so my standard page would not show them, but once people start to enlarge it it will show them.

Kimmer:

You can try it out on Smiley's Credit page smile.gif
Seems yesterday you managed to answer before I posted the answer to Airbusdriver so I didn't noticed your post till I checked it again today.
Not ignoring you over there wink.gif

New Upgrades:
  • I finalized the Form Page. Although there's still something wrong with it. At this point I will receive the mail you send through the form but it is set to send a confirmation to your self also (when you add an email) but that does not seem to work. Feel free to try it and let me know in case you DO get a confirmation.
  • And I added the Credit Pages and yes, Techsurvivors is in there smile.gif
Final Note:
I probably won't be doing much anymore as I will fly to Denmark on Thursday. I'll be back in London on Sunday but expect to start working again someday in the next week.

Smiley will be in London to stay clap.gif

Great! But don't misunderstand me and my comments about scroll bars. I do not like scroll bars, either. But few sites can get by without vertical scrolling and I don't think even a minority of people dislike those enough to avoid using a site that has them. But let the content decide on whether vertical scrolling is required or not. Not using "overflow: hidden;" will not, automatically, create any scroll bars when used with lines of text. The lines will simply break when they get to the right-hand edge of the window/screen/box/column. They will not cause horizontal scroll bars, which is the only type of scrolling that I have ever seen criticized.

I'm still not understanding what you are using "overflow: hidden;" for. You don't need them to prevent horizontal scrolling of text. Text will automatically wrap to fill the width of the container.

Have a great trip to Denmark! I hope you don't find anything rotten there! laugh.gif

Euhm... I think we are starting to confuse each other here wink.gif

I am using overflow: hidden; yes, and I know it will not give me scrollbars and the text that is to much for that container will simply vanish (using the container dimensions as some sort of mask)
overflow: auto; however, and I will look into this, will automaticly ad scrollbars when needed (meaning when the text is to much for the container to hold).
So like you say, when you set it to "auto", the content will decide to ad scrollbars or not.

The reason why I use overflow: hidden; is cause I don't like scrollbars but I know I can just as well take this out and everytime I see scrollbars (when using the overflow: auto;), I can just take out some text till at least for me the website shows clean.

And euhm.... what rotten things should I find in Denmark? tomato.gif

Hopefully not to add to the confusion, but...

Why use any type of 'overflow' at all? Text will always ( OK, that's a dangerous thing to say when discussing so many browsers! ) obey the width of any container and break a line as needed. It will not cause any kind of scroll bar when doing that, however. Unless you use the 'overflow' function. Just leave it out and see what I mean.

Text will force a container to be taller, to accommodate more lines of text but it will not cause any scroll bars, neither vertical or horizontal, in the container, assuming you do not use the 'overflow' function.

That's why I'm trying to find out exactly why you have used "overflow: anything;". What is it about the automatic flow of text in html that you don't want? smile.gif

Pretty cool. It's like an integrated photo album. I figured you were busy yakking with ABD, and I didn't feel ignore.

I keep meaning to say ... I really like the colors you chose to use on your site. Elegant, strong, easy to view. Reminds me of the skin I use here at TS (midnight orange).

Thanks Kimmer,
It is a really cool effect yes, and it's free... what more do you wish for? smile.gif
I had some problems getting it to work cause it seems the javascript (external sheet) only likes to work with full pathnames like:
CODE
http://www.marceldaems.com/folder/file.htm

And not with relative pathnames like:
CODE
../folder/file.htm

So for a while I got pretty frustrated for it not working, till I figured out to try the full pathnames and put it all online and... that's what it is now smile.gif

Lol Airbusdriver tongue.gif
Let's just agree that I will take out the overflow: anything; code first when I start working on the site again wink.gif

And for this topic also,
Ahoi and see you again somewhere next week salute.gif
