Adding favourits to the TOP of a finder window.
« on: August 20, 2007, 12:39:45 PM »
Hi All,

I bet alot of you already knew but I just found this out.
I know you can add anything you like to the left side of a finder window by just dragging it into it but... yesterday I found you can also put files (and folders?) on the TOP bar of the finder window ohmy.gif
When clicking on it, it opens that specific file, just like a shortcut.
It might be handy for files you use much, but don't feel like adding to the cluster of folders from the left side of your finder window.

That's a picture from Smiley, just so I can click on it and see her lovely face whenever I want (and don't feel like turning my head... since she's on every side of the room here)

I just tried it again and it is "drag & drop" yes.
Maybe it's something new they added to OsX Version 10.4.10?
Just drag and drop an item to the top, and when at the top and when there's room to add it will show you a "green plus" sign on your cursor, telling you can drop it there.
I did notice that, when you have a "flexible space" item in your toolbar, you'll have to drop your item to the edges of that since it will not drop on the "flexible space".

To remove, that's another thing though.
Although you can remove the standard Toolbar Items by again dragging and dropping them out the toolbar (where they will go with the nice cloud animation and sound), the items you add yourself will have to be deleted by right-clicking on them and choose "remove item" on the contextual menu.

Thanks Marcel.  I find one needs not only to right-click but also depress the Control key.

Right click? wink.gif

Do all new Macs come with a multi-button mouse?

If I'm understanding this correctly, it sounds like a new twist on the "old way" to move items to the top: add a space before the file/folder name. That leaves all such "renamed" items at the top of the list in alphabetical order. But, you can add 2 spaces to further differentiate a hierarchy.

Is this the same thing?

No. If you look at the image above, you'll see that this is about adding icons to the silver bar above the list of files/folders, not about making a specific folder/file first in a listing.

Not sure about that Gregg.  I'm using a Logitech Laser mouse, which has a right & left button and six others, all programmable.

Most "right-click" actions are reproduced with a 'control-click'. But Apple has made multi-button mice for at least a couple of years, now...they called them "Mighty Mouse(s)", I think.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

I posted recently about the Leader's aversion to multiple buttons. As I recall, the article said he insisted on a one button mouse. It was only during his, ahem, leave of absence that a multiple button mouse was sold with a Mac.

The ability to put things in the top bar has been there I think since Jaguar. It certainly is available in Panther.

And you can remove items by holding down the Command key and dragging them off the bar. Poof!
