Link to cure iBook video problems with fire!
« on: September 30, 2007, 09:59:09 PM »
While I have often used a soldering iron to touch up bad solder joints I would never have used "fire" to do the same job:

I love the image and "might" use the technique some day to fix something when all else fails!

Wow, fantastic!!!! Look at all the folks that used this advice over 10 months, far-out.

I would cut a piece of steal the size of the chip, heat it to X and lay in on the solder balls myself. The guy that used the quarters was successful it seems, but that would leave too much to chance.

A classic "don't try this at home" procedure. Note that the "surgeon" didn't have money invested in the iBook...
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I liked the last comment:

QUOTE
YES YES YES

A thousand thankyous.
YOU HAVE FIXED MY BELOVED iBOOK
Oh, what heartfelt thanks.

I did it exactly like you said.
I lit a tealight on the chip. When it was melted I blew it out and doped it with white spirit.
Lit it again, turned the iBook on, waited for the fan to spin up…
Had to have to attempts before it worked reliably but HEY it works now.

ZERO TO HERO

Almost sounds like a sacrament!

Neat! Instead of soldering extremely thin and numerous wires, they simply let the solder flow through holes drilled in the appropriate places. Who'd a thunk! Capillary action saves the day/chip/wire!

Now, can anyone describe how they make the solder balls! And, is there any 'flux' being used? Looks like a great segment for "How it's Made"! Another great import from Canada! smile.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
