We have a bank acct. in Venezuela and on the bank's home page, they're promoting a raffle where you can win an iPhone if you sign up for some service. I suppose it's unlocked and not updated to 1.1.1 or how else could people use it?

I'm willing to bet it isn't even a legit iPhone.

Saw an interesting segment on the tube about all the fake tech stuff (including iPods, etc.) that is being sold in South America and the profits used for terrorism around the world. Considering the present situation in Venezuela anything is possible.

(Oh dear, is this post going to be labeled 'political' ?)

Hey Dan, you could buy an iPhone here without a provider (at&t) and use it as an iPod and PDA. If you have an iPhone on a plan and take it to Venezuela you will only have emergency services, something I read on an at&t blog somewhere. Yes, it could be unlocked as well. With NO services available in Venezuela I don't think Apple would sue you for breaking the software contracts.

I have an old school buddy from down that way; he joined a group of us that ran the Boston Marathon together. Good dude, pretty sister.

I'm not interested in it myself, just thought it was unusual. This package they're selling is to facilitate buying things in the U.S. without leaving Venezuela, since most online US stores don't accept non-US credit cards. I don't think it's terror-related because a Spanish bank is the majority shareholder.

Hey Dan, that's interesting and is another example of why so many were sold but not connected. It was like 2 to 1. The guys at iPhone DEV continue to rewrite the code as the upgrades move along, a locked iphone doesn't mean to much if you wait a few weeks after the firmware releases.

I listen to a tech podcast from El Salvador and they were talking about unlocked iPhones available there. One said that the only reason he doesn't get one is that the auto-correct in English.
