Here we go, just in time for the stress free holidays!

A few weeks ago we decided to just buy a replacement for our aging but not really that old Brother printer. Decided to get a newer version of what we had; replace an MFC-8640N with an MFC-8860DN. Not that much more than a new fuser/toner cart.

Worked fine for 14 days! Duplex started creating paper jams, then, today, even a single-sided print caused paper jams. Talked with a fairly easy to understand young lady in the P.I. We ran through the trouble-shooting steps on her screen and when the "Print report" step created another paper jam, she decided it was time to cut to the chase. Two choices:1 ) Return the printer and get a refurbished in return or 2 ) Deliver to a local shop for repair.

I had to make a judgment call that the 'company' would have better checking/repairing facilities and experience than the local company. Who knows? dntknw.gif

Replacing a two week old printer with an unknown entity is not perfect. Where do I complain and who will care? sad.gif

At least the lady was quite easy to understand. OTOH, they usually teach English over there...

Only 2 wks old and they won't flat out replace with a new one?!?!?!

From what store did you buy this?

I've always been able to return items to Staples and get a replacement within 30 days. Shoot, WallyWorld will do that for you. wink.gif As will most online retailers.

I'd certainly try that before I settled for refurbished or repaired.

As far as complaining, write to the company. Contact BBB. Contact the seller.

Problem is complaining and fighting stuff like this takes time and eventually we all get tired of it and quit -- which is what the companies want us to do. wink.gif

Ever hear Neil Sedaka sing "Little Brother"? wink.gif
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

OK, had a few minutes to check the Office Depot site and discovered that they have a 14 day free exchange program. Although you need to have the original box and packing, which all paranoid users will store in the attic, anyway! But, this is the 15th day of 'use!' What will they do? Thinking.gif

Called the store, asked to speak to a manager (why waste time?). "Please hold." Sure! "When did you buy it?" OK, here goes the make-it-or-break-it fact, "Nov 6." "Please hold." Listen to the recorded ads for a few minutes. "Is there anything wrong with the printer?" "No, I just don't want to dust it off. So I thought a brand new one would look cleaner. Yes, it won't print. Other than that it's fine." "Please hold." More recordings, at least there was no obnoxious Muszak! smile.gif "OK, bring it in and we'll give you a new one." Just glad it's a short trip AND I was sitting down! laugh.gif

OK, returned with the new one intending to call Brother and ask them to cancel the refurbished shipment. Before I could even get the new one installed, FedEx pulls up with the replacement! Well, the Brother distribution center is only 20 miles from here... Asked the driver about refusing the shipment, fine by me he says. We'll now see how much I get charged for the travel of the refurbished printer...Paranoid.gif

Now, I go back and finish installing the printer, turn it on and what is the first sound I hear? The same loud beeping and a screen that says "Paper Jam!" wallbash.gif Wait, there was a piece of paper in the document feeder, did I remove that as required? Nope, pull it out and reset the error message. Print something via duplex (difficult to do while keeping two sets of fingers crossed!) and it WORKS! clap.gif

Now, I guarantee this printer will work for 2 years. How do I know? I bought my first ever 'replacement' package from OD. They will supposedly replace the printer for two years, no questions asked. We'll see...

So, thanks for encouraging me to try a less expensive method of replacing the original printer. And I am also accepting donations for the costs Brother may attempt to put on my credit card... smile.gif
