Beware the Eco-Disc!
« on: January 18, 2008, 09:43:25 AM »
A new sort of more ecologically friendly DVD disc is gumming up Apple Slot DVD drives:

QUOTE
A free DVD given away with the Mail on Sunday has created a "brisk trade" at Apple repair stores, according to a PC Pro reader.

As we reported on Monday, last Sunday's free Jazz Singer DVD was printed on a new format called EcoDisc, which is half as thin as an ordinary DVD and can get stuck in certain Apple slot-loading drives.

The disc and disc sleeve carry a small warning, advising readers not to place the Ecodisc into Apple Macs, but it appears to have gone unnoticed by some.

I can remember 5-1/4" floppy disks that ate some of our Apple II drives "back in the day!"

Can it be true that Apple is the only one using tray-less optical drives?! dntknw.gif They certainly don't make them, anyway. Maybe there are just more Mac users that read the Mail (but not CD/DVD labels)?

It's just His Steveness's way of getting us to give up discs of any kind. (As krissel hinted)

There's mail on Sunday?!?!

Gads, our PO just shortened their Mon-Fri hours and they aren't open on Saturdays.

I'm jealous. Jealous, I tell ya!

Sandyman - I kind of sort of "get" that the Mail is not well-respected but is there something especially bad about the Sunday version?  Just curious!

All - While I believe I've seen the slot type drives in use in bookshelf-PC's by companies like Shuttle I think this has never caught on as much in PC's!  Of course if you have one of the newest Apple laptops you wouldn't have a problem with getting things stuck in the drives! smile.gif

Both editions of the "Mail" are what you would possibly call part of the "Yellow Press".  The Mail aspires to the standards of what we know as the "Broadsheet" Press, but IMHO (and that of others) fails. It's a bit difficult to explain unless you have seen and read examples of UK newspapers Thinking.gif

There is also a fad in the British Press for giving away free DVDs which is, in some quarters, a tad controversial, to say the least.

As Sandy says, difficult to explain the attitude of many of us to the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Link can let you judge for yourselves. But on the occasions I do read it, I just end up angry. That and the Daily Express. Without getting political.... it is well nigh impossible to explain. If you find any GOOD news on there, do alert us to it! smile.gif

The Mail on Sunday has that name style because there was already a Sunday Mail when the Daily Mail launched its Sunday version. I believe the Sunday Mail is still going strong in Scotland; can you confirm, Sandy?

And - pedant alert smile.gif - surely the disk must be "half as thick", not half as thin. If it's half as thin, then it's twice as thick and it wouldn't go in the drive at all....  Thinking.gif

The Sunday Mail is the Sunday edition of the Daily Record, another publication masquerading as a Newspaper

Oddly, I had to pop to Sainsbury's this morning, and there, all alone in a rack, was one copy of the Sunday Mail - hadn't realised it sold this far away from Scotland!  No, I didn't buy it! And today's Mail on Sunday was offering a free CD (not an eco one!), but can't remember what was on it.
