Here's a scary warning coming from the CIA: Washington Post article

Hackers have already cut off power to cities outside the U.S. Made me wonder about that major power outtage we had in 2003.

Edited: I think I should have posted this in the community section since it's not Mac-related.

Wow. That is scary. The use of insiders isn't surprising - that's often the case; but the (apparently) unprotected - or poorly protected - wireless utility networks is surprising. I keep thinking companies are smarter than they are.



PS: I think Tech is the right forum. From front page: This forum is for seeking help or discussing matters of a technical nature such as Macs, PCs, operating systems, hardware (drives, iPods, cell phones, etc.) as well as news regarding the business and development of technology.

New Power System Cyber Security Standards

How well those standards satisfy the requirement, how well they are implemented, and how effective they are when properly executed, well, that is an issue for another day...

Not being a big fan of the Washington Post I would normally be skeptical but the story broke on http://www.informationweek.com/news/showAr...cleID=205901631 the day before, and was posted on SlashDot as well. This is not a new hack or a new idea, this story has been told in books authored by numerous intelligence and x intelligence insiders. With the Telecoms trying to take over the internet I would suspect to see more of these scares forthcoming and the telecoms making claims that they can secure the Web if they can only have more control over content. wink.gif
