"Controversial" applies to a topic on which less than, oh, say 90% of people agree on. wink2.gif

Ok, so that's arbitrary. One could argue that all subjects are "controversial" since there isn't anything that 100% will agree about. dntknw.gif

It was a song, from an entertainer, his personal statement, he was probably paid well to do it. How can that be "controversial?" Now, if he was paid to sing these lines and doesn't agree with them, I think he crossed the line of ethics. So, I enjoy Mr. Newman's work (his singing for a little while!). But he's not someone I'd rely on for information about what our government is or is not doing, or what it should be doing. Entertainers are just that, IMHO. they can and will say/sing whatever they think. That's how they make a living. They find an audience that will support them, or they find another job! It's still a free country. clap.gif salute.gif We don't have to agree with everything that is done/sung/said to maintain our freedom.

BTW, "controversial" doesn't mean that any number of people "agree on a subject." I think it means a topic/action/speech/etc. that could "cause general public disagreement or problems." dntknw.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

I didn't think this thread would evolve into a controversy over the definition of controversial. Since the latter uses the former in its definition...

con·tro·ver·sy
–noun, plural -sies.
1. a prolonged public dispute, debate, or contention; disputation concerning a matter of opinion.
2. contention, strife, or argument.

Ok, so my layman's version took some liberties... rolleyes.gif

The choice of material and, if it was signed off by Steve Jobs, has become controversial as Gregg has pointed out:

con·tro·ver·sial adj
1.   provoking strong disagreement or disapproval, for example, in public debate
2.   enjoying or habitually engaging in controversy

Performed at Carnegie Hall in 2006 so it wasn't a surprise to his Stevieness. Given the power of this company, it's leader, exposure and access to any of a million performers in the world, why did his Stevieness choose Randy and his song, 2 years out of popular circulation? He had a point to make, what was it, and whoall(as they say in the south) was it for?

in addition to the original song he added this http://www.dailywrit.com/newman.wav

QUOTE
Its pissing me off a little that the Supreme Court is going to outlive me. Couple young Italian fellas and a brother on the Court now, too. But I defy you to find me, anywhere in the world, two Italians as tight-assed as the two Italians we got here. And as for the brother- well Pluto’s not a planet anymore either.

A Few Words in Defense of Our Country
By Randy Newman

QUOTE
I’d like to say a few words
In defense of our country
Whose people aren’t bad nor are they mean
Now the leaders we have
While they’re the worst that we’ve had
Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen

Let’s turn history’s pages, shall we?

Take the Caesars for example
Why within the first few of them
They had split Gaul into three parts
Fed the Christians to the lions
And burned down the City
And one of ’em
Appointed his own horse Consul of the Empire
That’s like vice president or something
That’s not a very good example, is it?
But wait, here’s one, the Spanish Inquisition
They put people in a terrible position

I don’t even like to think about it
Well, sometimes I like to think about it

Just a few words in defense of our country
Whose time at the top
Could be coming to an end
Now we don’t want their love
And respect at this point is pretty much out of the question
But in times like these
We sure could use a friend

Hitler. Stalin.
Men who need no introduction
King Leopold of Belgium. That’s right.
Everyone thinks he’s so great
Well he owned The Congo
He tore it up too
He took the diamonds, he took the gold
He took the silver
Know what he left them with?
Malaria

A president once said,
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”
Now it seems like we’re supposed to be afraid
It’s patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
That’s what terror means, doesn’t it?
That’s what it used to mean

The end of an empire is messy at best
And this empire is ending
Like all the rest
Like the Spanish Armada adrift on the sea
We’re adrift in the land of the brave
And the home of the free
Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.
