Safari doesn't look back
« on: January 22, 2008, 07:29:06 AM »
People keep mentioning Firefox and Camino, among others. One thing I've noticed with Safari is that the "back" button only lets me go back to the previous page. I'm used to being able to "skip" back 3 or 4 at a time. Maybe I can change Safari's settings? ...or maybe I need to change browsers.

With Safari you click and hold the back arrow which will open a drop menu. If the menu doesn't go back far enough the first time, then do the same thing to go back further.

I didn't know any browser would go back more than one page at a time. How did you do that and how would you decide when you wanted that to occur? dntknw.gif

But if you are saying that you can never go back more than one page, you may not have Safari set to maintain a History of more than that. Only 'control' I can see is in the General tab, Delete history after "One Day, One (or Two) Week(s), One Month and Manually." Just another reason many don't use Safari or search for hacks for it. It is made to be easy to use for the slightly less than average surfer, IMHO. When you want more control over things like Cache size, allowed javascripts, etc., you'll probably have to move on to another browser.

Maybe there are users here that know more about adding or changing the prefs in Safari. I know there was a 'add-on' called Safari Enhancer and I'm sure there are others.

OTOH, I have FF so nailed tight that I keep Safari around for sites that require more compliant browsers, once I've determined that they are safe sites. smile.gif

Hi Bruce. Yeah, I've seen the drop down menu. It hasn't had a list of recently visited pages. I think a right click will pull it down too.

laugh.gif At first, I typed "one page at a time" but never posted that since I figured it wasn't accurate and might cause confusion.

I'll check the History, but unless there's a setting for not allowing more than one page to be "stored" that wouldn't affect a session in which several pages are viewed.

I'm certainly a "less than average surfer" both on the internet, and the ocean. biggrin.gif

Holding down ok, change that to right clicking the "Back button" (the arrow pointing to the left) gives me only three choices:
Keep Item Visible
Remove Item
Customize Toolbar...

Those don't even seem to go with a "Back" function. dntknw.gif

Sometimes it takes more than one instruction for me to follow directions!

If I right click the back arrow I get the same results as you do. If I left click and "hold" it for a sec, I get the menu with the latest visited pages.

Thanks Bruce. I get the same result (of course) when I'm patient enough to hold the mouse button down.

Jim, I can actually go back more than one page at a time when I have several tabs open. tongue.gif

Not to confuse the issue, but are you opening a new tab for each page? Thinking.gif

No, but I do open a new page for each tab. wacko.gif

Anyway, as noted, Bruce's post tipped me off.
