updating with combo- is it okay?
« on: February 15, 2003, 06:28:00 AM »
I'm not sure why I did this, but I downloaded the 10.2.4 combo, even though I have my system updated to 10.2.3 already.  Is it okay to run the updater anyways?  Should I trash the receipt for 10.2.3 in the Library folder first?  Or should I rather download the single 10.2.4 updater (even though it took 6 hrs to download the combo!!)?

I would say the Combo should work, since it checks for what system you have installed and than install the thing you need for X.2.4.
But that's just me, others might be more sure about this.
I guess, best thing is read every piece of information that came with the download to find out
Or check their website (support) or so... it would be painfull yes if you need to spend another 6 hours downloading.

Csonni:

Your last sentence confirms why one doesn't want to download the combo, unless the existing OS version requires it. Smaller is better in D/Ls

I probably shouldn't cite this depressing factoid, but on DSL the "regular" 10.2.4 D/L took just over 4 minutes!

csonni, there's no problem with using the Combo download. It'll simply upgrade what needs upgrading, an "intelligent" installer.

Moreover, it's no bad thing to have a copy of the Combo version backed up away somewhere, rather than each individual upgrade.
It'll come in handy if, heaven forbid, you should ever need to start over from scratch.
That's one reason I occasionally prefer, myself, either to use the "download to desktop" option in Software Update or to go to the Apple site to fetch these things.
Time seemingly "wasted" now may one day not be wasted at all.

Actually, the combo-updater CAN fix problems that can surface while updating through Software Update, so it's not bad at all!
