According to what I have read in multiple places Apple downgraded the current 20" aluminum iMac monitor to a
"TN" LCD. The previous white 20" and 24" and current aluminum 24" are higher-grade IPS monitors.
Apparently the viewing angle has been reduced 10 degrees on the current iMacs.
Folks who need to calibrate their monitors (important for photo-related work...) are finding the new glossy screens a bear to adjust properly, especially when using hardware calibration devices.
Reflections? You Want Reflections? We've Got Reflections! There is no appreciable difference performance-wise between the current and former 24" iMacs. The main differences are the enclosure and LCD screen. The slight difference in processor speed is negligible and certainly not worth a $400 difference in price.
If the local store is offering AppleCare for half-price I would go for it, but in my experience that is an unheard-of price. The L.A. Computer Store has consistently had the lowest price outside education outlets. In fact, I think that the L.A. Computer Store price
is the educational discount price...
If you are interested in a white 24" iMac I suggest acting ASAP because they disappear quickly... My previous iMac was a 20" G5. The 24" screen is a significant step-up, which surprised me. I have been using it for photo editing and it is an excellent monitor, especially when you factor-in the cost.
