getting a very large pdf file to iphoto to get it printed
« on: March 19, 2008, 11:40:53 PM »
Hi, Following the advice of Leo Laporte and Sal Soghoian on MacBreak I created a thumbnail poster using 96 photographs into one  very large pdf file to be printed as a 20 x 30 poster.  They suggested putting it on iphoto and order it printed from there.  I can't get the pdf file to be recognized by iphoto.  I tried importing.  I tried moving the icon over the icon of iphoto.  No luck.    I also tried uploading it to to the Kodak service but they do not take pdf's. Any suggestions as to how I can get it printed via the web?  Thank you.

What application did you use to create it in the first place?

Hi,
It is via an automator function that I downloaded.  Her is a link.

I tried to have the last stage go into an iphoto album without success.  Perhaps I don't know how to get it there or used the wrong folder. I tried in the last stage to have it end in the 2008 iphoto folder or load into iphoto without success.

The file ends up on the desktop.  When I try to import it into iphoto I get the following notice
The file could not be imported.  It is in an unreadable format

You know, there are print shops like Kinko's who print oversize posters on a plotter. The files I've given them (pdfs) turn out very nice. Maybe you'd want to check into that option.

...though as dboh says, it might be better to leave it as a PDF and send it to a local print shop like Kinko's. smile.gif

Thank you.  I will take it to a place like Kinko's.  The original MacBreak item suggested ordering via iPhoto which is what I was trying to do.  Thanks again.

That link confirms what I thought. iPhoto is for images. A PDF is not an image. Therefore, iPhoto can't import it. I have seen these 'posters' made on a Mac but always assumed they were made by dumping the individual images (all the same size, of course - either because they are or by using a script/Automator) into a canvas lare enough to hold them (20 x 30 inches). Then the image can be imported/seen by iPhoto and its rather expensive Book/Printing connections can be used.

I'd give the Kinko shop a try first. dntknw.gif And there are probably several locla print shops that could print the PDF, also.
