The State of Jefferson!
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:29:48 PM »
I went camping years ago off the Skyline Drive in Virginia and met some people from California who I struck up an immediate but momentary friendship with.  One of the things they mentioned in passing was how good it would be to get back to the "State of Jefferson" and it took me over 35 years to remember that and look it up on the internet:

QUOTE
Jefferson is a mostly rural area of Southern Oregon and Northern California in the United States. Several times during the 19th and 20th centuries there have been attempts to establish the area as a separate state. This region on the Pacific Coast is the most famous of several that have sought to adopt the name of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States; the name was proposed in the 19th century for Jefferson Territory, as well as in 1915 in a bill in the Texas legislature for a proposed state that would be created from the Texas Panhandle region.

Apparently this was quite a serious attempt at succession just before WWII but is now a running joke.  Anyone out there have personal knowledge about it?

I also found this website:

Now I get it! We've driven by the "entering the state of jefferson" signs several times and wondered what in the world that was. Thanks for solving the puzzle.

^No, but when we've driven through that area many times.

I colored our area green. We are definitely on the left edge ... approx 400 ft from the left edge. In fact, I'll recolor it ... hold on. Okay, we live where that little yellow dot is. smile.gif  If you have google earth and want to look, I'll send you the coordinates.

You can send the coordinates; I have location envy!  I'm sure there are bad points about living where you do but I'm sure I'd like it!  Also like  your animated easter avatar!
