My modem disappeared
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:06:20 PM »
I just hate faxes.
So I have some medical things to fax and ... I no longer have a fax application on my G3 (10.5.2). I also apparently also no longer have modem, although i paid for an Apple one, still have the usb input connected  and have this under "about this Mac":

Modem Information:

  External Modems:
  Interface Type:   USB
  Modulation:   V.92
  Country Code:   B5
  Driver Name:   MotorolaSM56KUSB.kext (v(null))
  Number of Modems:   1
  USB Bus Location:

When I call up the AOL program, dial-up is no longer an option (i do still pay the subscription).
I downloaded a fax program and it says the modem is not responding.
The phone line to the usb input is live.

Of course i cannot find the Apple install disc in my meticulous filing system.
So i'll print out the forms and take them to work, as usual.
Thanks.

Ok. The modem did show up after unplug-replug. And there is no software disc, according to Apple.
But according to newly DL'd Fax Center, the modem is not responding. but i do have something to work with. And i still hate faxes, maybe even moreso!

Hingyfan - you don't need any additional software in OS X. It's in the Print menu. Select Print on your open document, then click on the PDF option and you'll see "FAX PDF..." - then just fill in the appropriate boxes in the dialog box that will open and off you go. smile.gif

(and I'm impressed - how did you manage to get 10.5.2 running on a G3??)

I guess i dont what the heck I have and im not home to check. IT is flat and white  and up to date.

One last question. Do I have to configure the modem? If so, how?
I think my attempt to do that screwed it up.

No, no, no. Fax is not one of the off-limits topics. I think you have that confused with another three letter word ending in 'x'. (No, Jim, its not "OSX".) tongue.gif

Nope - no configuration necessary. Of the modem, that is.... tongue.gif

I think you'll see what needs to be done once you get home; plug modem in, open document, select Print, select PDF, select Fax PDF and then fill in the fax number etc. and then when you hit send, it will dial/

Wow, that was easy. Bypassing the software makes it so simple.
Thanks!

Paddy:   I did not have a clue you could do that. huh.gif Over the years I struggled with os 8 & 9 and fax but the frustration level got too high wallbash.gif  so we gave up and bought a faxphone that we have been using for several years.

Great tip.  ( I tested it and works like gangbusters)

Thanks thanx.gif
